HELP - Cambelt - 4yrs or 60k?!

Featured Replies

Hi All,

my Fab VRS is 4 in October and needs an anual service then but has only covered 30k - asked the guy in Chapelhouse Skoda Wigan when the cambelt needs replacing and he told me 60k, not 4 yrs.

However, had only visited the place to get some top up oil and as they didn't have any (!)- went up the road to Corkills VW for the oil and the guy there grimaced and referred to Chapelhouse as 'our best customers' ! - hardly inspired confidence!

Does anyone have the DEFINITIVE answer on this one? - I only do 7-8k p/a and want to still be driving my Furbie when they're including them in a 2020 Topgear item on 'classics'.

Cheers,

Lebowski.

The DEFINITIVE answer is 4 years or 60k miles, whichever comes first.

For the sake of a couple of hundred quid, it's worth the peace of mind.

Most people also change the water pump at the same time, for a metal impellered one.

A search will reveal all of the answers to all of your questions.

HTH.

Sound advice from Mr G ;)

Agreed :D

The cost of your cambelt going is frankly not worth risking - ever - and when you do the swap, doing the waterpump and rollers etc makes sense, as the cost of those things is relatively low compared to labour, and they tend to let go or fail soon after replacing cambelt anyway if it's been on for the full duration.

Thanks chaps - suppose the missus will just have to do without the usual cr*p she buys on ebay for a week or 2 to fund!

Another Q - is this always a main dealer job or can independents do just as well?

DIY ;)

But if you're not into that, then a good indi can do it for muchos cheapness compared to a dealer
