I got some new rear discs/pads and now there seems to be a lot of rust as pictured:

Any easy way to get it off as it looks ribbish

Wire brush is probably easiest?

The problem is, the rust will re-appear very quickly unless you apply some paint to the area as untreated exposed steel rusts quickly.

I got that when I had some non VAG discs. I rubbed it back with a wire brush and painted them with green hammerite to match the callipers.

So wheel off and give it a good scrub then! Maybe a job for next weekend!

Is it a pain to do out of interest?

Ok, this is a real lame question... I only have the simple tools to take the wheel off... should I take it to a garage after to get it "torqued" to the right amount?

I would, better safe than sorry. 120 I think is the correct amout required.

Depends how much money you have to burn. I bought one of these and have been very impressed with it...

I wouldnt be that bothered about the torque settings as long as you dont go mad with a 3 foot bar tightening the wheels.

Ill take some pics of mine tomorrow. What I did was use some hi temp silver paint on the centre hubs and also disk edges. Looks like new now and really tidies the wheel area. The centres were not rusty like that though, use some rust killer/wire brush and then paint.

Here you go. The paint I used was a spraypaint (Sperex VHT paint) but I sprayed that into a pot and put lots of coats on. That was a few weeks ago and it looks fine since.

Looks good, think this'll be a job for next weekend.

Might polish and wax my wheels whilst i'm at it...

Oh, itll take you a good few hours. Be sure to get rid of that rust first and also use some good axle stands and chocks as youll have to take the handbrake off to rotate the rear disks to paint them. Worth the effort though.

Ok, so got a wirebrush, paintbrush and some hammerite "smooth silver"... will this be ok for this application heat wise?!

Indeed I did, very easy job to do and looked good when done Cant tell you how well it lasted as the car has now gone but I believe it to have lasted very well.

Ok did it today! Here are some (rubbish) pictures, should of put some tyre cleaner on before but nevermind!

What paint did you use? Looks much better BTW.

Only applied one coat so hope it lasts ok... Didn't take long to do and gave my wheels a polish and wax too.

A stupid question perhaps, but is it worth masking the actual braking surface of the disc off? Surely any excess paint will be scrubbed off with application of the brakes...
