Just back from picking up my new car. The dealer told me the same. He said that while the engine is bedding it it will use about 3 pnts of oil untill its first service at 20k. He also said that we should not top the oil up untill the light comes on.

Hope this helps

Agreed in general BUT - IMHO you should be checking the oil level frequently and top up BEFORE the light comes on.

I guess the dealer's perceived wisdom is that, if you wait until the warning light comes on you will be able to top up with a full litre without running the risk of overfilling, which can have consequences of damaging the Catalytic converter.

Hi,

Yes, thats the way he told it to me. I guess they must assume that the customers have never seen a car before

Isn't the oil light more about "GET ME SOME OIL RIGHT NOW OR YOU WILL DAMAGE ME BADLY" ?

Do not service your car at that dealer - sounds like a right muppet with bad advice like that. Does he also recommend checking trye pressures just as your rims begin to generate sparks from the road surface ?

I know where you are coming from! I'm just quoting what I was told :( as the OP was told the same.

You should check the oil level on a regular basis just in case the warning light

fails. That way you can monitor the oil level and predict when it will need a top up :)

We are on the same song sheet, I run bus company:O

The oil light will come on when the total oil ammount has droped by a litre (approx). This means there is still some four litres left in the engine (not going to blow up at that). That is why its an amber light not a red one.

Mine has been drinking oil regularly. I usually get 6,000 miles past a service and the light comes on. I bung a litre or so in and it is fine.

The clutch gets noisy when it's hot though. Anyone else get this?

15 months old, 40K miles

I must be the lucky one as it uses no oil between services so far :)
