MPi introduction

Featured Replies

Hi folks,

Names Dan, and usually post in the Fabia sections but had a brainwave to look around this section and there's some fantastic cars (especially the pick ups - brilliant!)

I was wondering if anyone could give me a quick tour of the basics of the mpi engine.

Reason I ask is not just for my Fabia 1.4, but I'm also considering a Felicia as a wee project.

After a bit of research, is it a common problem for MPi's to have a metallic rattle?

I've circled where it sounds to be coming from. Any help, greatfully appreciated.

I've done a wee search of the forums but couldn't see for trying

in fact, on closer look of that photo - the cogs look nothing like on my engine... Maybe I've been sold a Bugatti powered Fabia without been told

It's an 00 W reg 1.4 MPi

I *think* these have timing chains, and if so that's your best bet. Chances are something has happened to the pretensioner (assuming they have a chain and a pretensioner). That's where the timing chain would be anyway if it's based on the Skoda OHV type engine.

It'll likely to be the timig chain, they don't have a tensioner.

it will be the timing chain rattling. they are cheep to buy (about

yep, sounds like the good old chains

they'll rattle till the cows come home, but will never brake.

...The quality of the later 1400 MPis is worse than the original 1300 "136" engines. If you put both engine blocks side by side you can tell which has the better quality castings on its block and its not the 1400! But seem to remember a modification of the 1400 block to aid oil cooling.

I think thats the same with anything these days - nothing is built to last!

Ah brilliant, thanks for the help.

I think my car just needs a bit of tlc - idles poorly, drinks more than i do and is more hesitant than Tony Blair. Either way, happy as Larry with my Skoda, she's a good old bird when she wants to be
