Stuck in reverse

Featured Replies

Can't get my manual Octy out of reverse gear.

Was all fine, no clutch problems or selector issues before hand.

Any ideas how to get it out???

Thanks Ken

Check that no hoses, etc have got jammed in the linkage above the gearbox.....

Didn't Jason manage to jam his 'box when the inside cover for his headlight fell off into the engine bay...?

headlamp covers are nice and big. Pretty sure that someon (with a TDi - maybe) got the small (little finger sized) air hose from the filter box jammed....

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll check :>)

I did look last night but no hoses seemed to be in the way.

Any news?

all looks clear nothing in the way of the gear lever mechanism or the gearbox.

both cables thro the bulkhead look ok.

I suspect it might be the mechanism on the gear box but not sure how it should look normally.

Thanks

Ken

Thinking about, Mark had a small piece of plastic brek on his that prevent selection of gears..... about 6 months ago?

on top of the gearbox?

You could try taking the linkage off the top of the selector on the box and see if it's a linkage or gearbox problem.

As Matt said I had a piece of plastic that held the selector to the wire break on a previous car, but it is kind of obvious.

Have you tried putting some WD40 on the selector over night and some suitable grease or similar on the ball at the base of the gear stick?

I'd say worth a shot before you start looking at the more expensive options. It might be worth trying to take the handbrake off and gently rocking the car in gear. IIRC we did this to a friends uni banger to get it out of a gear it was stuck in.
