Featured Replies

I have had a bee in my bonnet on getting some personalised plates, could someone explain what i need to do (apart from spending money with dvla for the reg plate?) what happens with my current plate and what happens when i want to sell the car but keep the plate?

Cheers!!

You just choose which one you want, pay for it, they send you a certificate and you go to a licensing office and they do the rest.

When you put it back onto retention (take it off) they assign a plate to the car.

Your current plate goes into limbo. It doesn't get re-assigned to a car.

You will need to go to a DVLA office to get a new tax disc with the new vehicle reg on it (they just supply you with a tax disc that runs out the same time) and there are a couple of forms that need to be filled out. They'll take your V5 off you and send it off to Swansea, a couple of weeks later you'll get a V5 with the new registration of your vehicle.

Don't forget to tell your insurance about the new registration of the vehicle.

DVLA Personalised registrations

The above website covers most of the process.

Finally, when you want to sell your car, but keep your plate, you need to go through the whole process again, i.e. another tax disc with the vehicle reg. etc. Chances are it'll be the same plate as you had before (for this reason don't throw your old number plates away) and fill out another form to retain the plate.

I have just gone through this very process and although the plate was a DVLA £250 special, it still cost me £110 to put it on retention before I put it back on my new one :thumbdwn:

As for the old plate, you effectively 'lose' it in the DVLA system and unless someone has a desire for that particular plate, it wil be yours to put back on the vehicle at a later date.

cheers steve i better start saving my plate i want is rather alot ;)

This thread has just reminded me that I need to renew my retention cetificate. The DVLA don't always remind you when it runs out and if it lapses you give up any claim to your plate!

Tip with DVLA

If theres a reg you fancy & it hasnt been issued or is no longer current (ie car was scrapped) if you express a serious interest they will issue it to an auction & notify you of the date together with the min guide price, it can take 12 months but sometimes worth it

You will note on the web site with the less desireable plates, three letters & then numbers they normally only give numbers 1-20 then 100, 200, 300, 111, 222 , etc. odds are other numbers arent issued & can be had, often with the usual 250 reserve but its definately a gently gently talk nicely process
