New tyres - feels a bit odd... (vibration etc.)

Featured Replies

06 vRS Fabia - with 40k on the clock.

On my third set of tyres (the ones fitted from factory (Touranzas) then Proxes T-R1s, now Pirrelli Pzero Neros).

when accellerating I get quite a bit of steering wobble (vibration). also when driving along (but less so). I've had this before with other cars, and well, I've not had tracking checked since new; could this be causing it?

I had the wheels balanced...

The only other thing to report was the sensation of a big stone or something else flinging off first on the right, then on the left. there weren't any stones I drove over - it was soooo loud - I thought it was a wheel bolt - really nasty.

Maybe the wheel balancing strips came off?

So I've paid £240 for a 40k service (where they stuck my 50MPH spare on - cause the edge of the wheel had a run off  ), and £145 on two new front tyre replacements - and although running more smoothly - it's now giving me vibration white finger! :(

I recently had my tyres changed also and they were balanced etc and I also get a vibrating steering wheel if I accelerate at 60mph +

It goes away if I ease off the throttle though. Quite strange.

These problems tend to be balancing related and most tyre places don't seem to be able to balance wheels at all! My recommendation is find somewhere that can (or will finger plate balance them) and get the car to them.

Its a bit of joke though isnt it. Youd expect a licensed tyre fitters to be able to balance wheels!

It's not always that simple. Sometimes they need to be refitted.

Also especially with alloys the weights have a habit of coming off.

I had exactly the same problem- its just the balancing.

Its about a 5er a wheel for re-balancing isnt it?

Yep- although the original tyre supplier should be able to balance them properly FOC

Spoken to the tyre place - they think it's the balancing and are happy to take a look (also at the tracking). But I'll not be able to take it to them until Friday.

It certainly seemed like something flicked off....

Thanks for your posts - makes me feel better about driving the car home.

Cheers, D

Yeah, balancing for sure.

Some of the bigger outfits can't balance wheels at all. Weights need to be stuck onto a clean wheel for starters, and I've never seen a rag and solvent at Qwik Fit  Also, some places won't balance to zero, just to 5 or 10g... which is unacceptable imo.

I'm lucky to have a local tyre place that actually care. They even use a torque wrench with correct settings to do the wheel nuts back up, so you can get them off when stranded with a flat on the M6... ;)

it wasnt a major quick dealer was it? i find i always have problems with the big dealers and not the small independent guy.

Yes; I'm doubtful that they were stuck on clean tyres...

It's most noticable around 50 - 70ish - the more I put my foot down - the more the vibration.

I can't figure out why it would be more accelleration = more vibration (at same speed).

hopefully will get it sorted

Have you checked the tightness of the wheel nuts?

All bolts checked - all nice and tight...

same as me

So has yours been fixed? - was it the balancing?

read on another forum about knackered flywheels - don't think it's that - I only get the vibration through the wheel.

I've had vibration before on other cars - and that has normally been tracking. It's just a new experience where the vibration only really occurs significantly when you put your foot down.

D

I am certain that its the balancing. I had the exact same vibration when accelerating- just lost a balacing weight. Wheels re-balanced- sorted :)

Really nothing to worry about.

robbyboyce,

Many thanks - just been googling; and that suggested things like worn CV joints, suspension bushes etc.

Thing was - no vibration prior to my service - this has only happened with my new tyres.

They are Pirelli's so not budget tyres.

The only other fact to consider is that my offside front had a touch more ware (maybe 0.5mm on the inside (perhaps 1 too many enthusiatic coners only...).

I'll get it looked at tomorrow. and hopefully it will then be sorted :-)

Thats the trouble with googling- it turns up lots of worrying and expensive possibilities!

Lots of problems occuring with the new non-lead balancing

Instead of a half inch of lead, we now have three inches of unleaded material

You could try and find a non national tyre fitter who will fit the old weights when balancing

Fortuantley I have the choice of three, the one I use is the I pay I say, fitter

I used kwik spit (held to ransom for the MOT) and got the classic shake at 60 back twice second time tyre removed and repositioned still the shake came thoug at 55

Took it to where I wanted the job done first , and balanced, shake gone

I expect he will be put out of business shortly for using poluting lead weights

If that happens I will request the council replace the quarter ton of lead pipe they have in my home drinking water

It is farcical, half an ounce of lead on a wheel, is now illegal, but safer as wheels are balanced,

Quarter of a ton of lead pipe that you actually drink the water that has run through it is OK mate

National

are there any risks of the wheels being slightly out of balance? tyre wear etc?

Returned car to tyre fitter who re-did the balance and tracking; still vibration.

I stopped at another fitter thismoring - and they did the job right. Now all sorted; no vibration.

Happy bunny.
