Low pressure lead to uneven tyre wear?

Featured Replies

Hi

I checked not long back and found my pressures no greater than 30Psi, this seems low and underinflated and I have got it closer to about 35Psi now which seems healthier, and the group concensus seems to follow.

However I also spotted uneven tyre wear - I am wondering if the pressure had anything to do with it, thats what I suspect.

The wear, strangely is not on the insides, seems to be more like the OUTsides of the tyre closest to the curb. I was even thinking of taking it to be checked and aligned in case the wheels are badly out.

I was also playing with idea of moving the (stock) rims + tyres to the back to get the most from them. Not usually done - but at the cost of the tyres and I have only done 14k I'm a little reluctant to chance it and have to shell out over £200 prematurely.

I just thought this would help flatten out the tyre tread, and thus get the most out of them. The rears unsurprisingly are like new.

Is this a reasonable idea, any comments please :o)

Thanks

wear on the outside edge of the tyre will be greater if the tyres have been under inflated , depending on how much tread is left on the front tyres (+4mm), a swop to the rear maybe ok , and should even out the wear

what car is it ?

Oops the PD130...it really is approaching to the outside of the tyre as mostly the rest of the tyre seems to have quite a lot of tread on hence my concern on burning them out early (even though they are still legal).

Running them perhaps slightly overinflated will wear out the centres more, but the trade off is it's not ideal as you'll have less rubber in contact with the ground. Safety thing. :)

Differing makes of tyre seem to like different tyre pressures tbh.

If yours are Contis, 'personally' I would swap front to back, put 33psi in the back and 35 psi in the front.

That should even up the tyre wear, and give you better handling and braking.

That is only my personal opinion, and WILL differ from the pedants and experts on here.

The standard Continentals are rubbish tbh.

Still got the standards.

The front outer edge seemed to have worn far more than the inner/centre pattern. I spent the weekend swapping over the fronts to rears, also inspected for damaged to tyres and rims and gave the inner rim a damn good clean !!

Got the pressures settled at 35psi on the fronts. Interestingly it seemed to be pulling more to the left and felt light a harder ride at the front, and a bit more difficult to steer than before @ 36psi.

I am wondering if the standard work better on some combo of pressure between max load and the standard, I'll keep an eye on it. The rears (now fronts!!) are like new anyway so at least I won't need to worry about tyre changes for a little while longer.

Outer edges may have worn through over enthusiastic cornering or wheel alignment issues..... sticking a bit more air in the tyre helps to stiffen the side wall a bit and helps reduce the cornering wear.

Mine had dunlops on the front and they had worn the very inner and outer edges. When I swapped to 17's and 205 Khumo's I had the tracking checked and it was bang on, but even now the outer edges of the front's have worn more than the rear's (it's just taken the little bobbles off the very edge).

I'm running 36psi front and 32psi rear.

Too look at, it's almost like the car runs negative castor (or camber, can't remember which) as the front wheel is so vertical compared to the rear (which must have some castor/camber built in at the rear hub mounting points.

It's typical on a sporty car to wear the outer edges of tyres, especially if you corner enthusiastically. Not sure which Khumo's you have, but when you replace them, look for a tyre with a re-inforced sidewall as this reduces the sidewall flex under load and the tyre wear on the outer edges....

I think they are reinforced, they're KU31's, only had tham a couple of months. Agree with your cornering statement though, that car hasn't been lowered or tweaked in the suspensio department so far, so the outer ware is probably over enthusiasm on my part:D
