Wheel groaning

Featured Replies

Hello all,

I need help and advice please.

My octy has developed a groaning sound at about 30mph+ when turning right and when driving in a straight line. When turning left it is quiet.I have jacked up all for corners and found no play at all in any of the bearings. There is no difference in sound when the wheels are spun either.I think the noise is coming from the front n/s wheel.

My question is could this be a dry wheel bearing or is there some other explanation?

My car has done 98000 miles and if the previous owner has not had any bearings changed i have done well, but why no play?

Thanks Martin

Do you think it might be a CV joint Martin?

Any signs of a damaged or split CV boot?

Thanks for reply stu.

There is no splits and no knocking on full lock but this maybe possible. How do you tell though?

Initially they can be hard to diagnose, but the noise changing pitch/tone on turning the wheel can be one of the indicators.

If it is quite worn you might be able to hold the driveshaft in your hand and rattle/wiggle it.

I just had a right good wiggle with my driveshaft:O

There is no significant play in either side and what tiny bit there is is where it attaches to the gearbox.

This makes me think it is the bearing...I hope so as its cheaper:D

Oh and all the tyres are at correct pressure and no new tyres lately.

When you checked for play in the bearings did you jack the car up?

yes car was jacked and i have also tried to wobble when on the ground.

i had the same symptons on my fabia vrs and took it yesterday to dealers. They took me out and they heard it, thing is they told me its the brake carrier and calipers need changing aswell. thats what was causing the noise. very strange and im not a mechanic so excuse me if it dont make sense. its covered under warranty but hopefully will sort it out.

Try checking the tyre profile by running your hand across it and see if it feels odd.

There was a good post and diagnosis regarding noise :)

Profile is fine, nice and smooth on both wheels and wearing perfectly.

I don't think its a brake problem although i will try braking when cornering to see if it makes any difference.

The mileage seems to suggest bearing faliure and as its on the front n/s this side would get the most battering.

I just don't want to change it for nothing.

Changed my own front bearing today. What a pig of a job but my car is now groan free.Thank god i got the correct wheel as i didn't fancy doing the other side too.

Don't haynes make the job sound easy when in fact its a hassle with seized bolts etc which they don't seem to mention.

I now have great respect for all you mechanics out there who do this kind of job for a living.
