Reasons for my Fabia 1.4MPI to eat the inside edge of the front tyres!

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I seek the collective's help on a worrying matter.

I went to a garage to get my exhaust system (back and mid) replaced, it was still on the OEM one after seven years, not bad. £110 quid all in... I wasn't too bothered - it needed doing as it was blowing and I was miles from home.

Garage checked out my tyres FOC.

The tracking was spot on according to their handbook.

Back two were in need of a change - I knew this from the MOT.... no shock there

Front two... I knew that they didnt have much left on them from the MOT (a couple of months ago) however, the drivers side tyre was down to 0mm on the inside edge and the passenger side down to 0.3mm on the inside edge.

What could cause this?

The tyre guy reckoned it was because I have to use full lock to reverse onto my drive in my congested street, and this daily would cause lots of strain on the tyres. Is he playing with me or could this be a legitimate cause?

The two fronts were Avon CR322 fuel saver tyres, brand new just over a year ago. I've replaced them with Michelin Energy ones to see if it is brand specific.

any advice or sugestions much appreciated. I don't want to be shelling out for new fronts every year!

My old Fabia 1.4 MPI did this too, it was because of worn bushes in the suspension setup.

Payed 1500kr - ~150£ incl. bushes and labour.

My car had around 70.000km on the clock at the time.

I was going to suggest that too , either console bushes or anti roll bar bushes are Fabia weak points (ive had mine done @ just over 30,000 miles!) , these being worn would cause movement in your suspension. Do you hear knocks/clunks from the front end going over speedbumps etc? This is a telltale that you need the bushes done.

Thanks for that information, it doesnt sound that expensive to do, mine's just gone past the 60,000 mark so this could be it!

I havent noticed any clunks aore squaks going over speed bumbs yet, but i'm going to agree with the suggestion that the bushes need to be replaced. I'd reckon that they are the OEM bushes - they are probably pretty worn after years of speed bump and ramp abuse.

many thanks for the information
