Mintex too Extreme?

Featured Replies

I also find Halfords 5.1 fluid to be as good if nor better than any other fluid, especially for the ££.

I second this.

The stock disks never warped, never faded and often got used for this sort of driving. I reckon the disks are the weak link, Brembo being what the guys had in stock as OEM replacement.

RBF600 is a DOT 4 fluid that has the highest service temperature tolerance of any road system fluid AFAIK. It will go over 312 deg C dry and over 212 deg C wet. Never tried the Halfrauds stuff but probably fine as well.

So further testing, the disks are most definitely warped. Now notice it whenever they come down a slip road to slow or stop. Tried re cooking them with another b/c road blast but that just made it worse. Tried a few hard stops just in case it was pad residue, no joy there either.

Contacted GSF this morning, they wont refund until Brembo have inspected the discs:thumbdwn: Not my idea of good customer service. May try Zimmermans or stock discs next.

The pads only have 3500 miles on them, so will try replacing discs only. Not too happy about doing that, but don't have a choice as I wont get pads refunded as well.

I was reliably informed even I couldnt warp a set. I duly did

:rofl::rofl::rofl:

Ian Godney at Godspeed made similar claims about his discs but they still warped. My mechanic friend and I put it down to them being cross-drilled, but a bit disappointing nonetheless. :(

Agree about the Halfords 5.1

If you can borrow a DTI Chris, you can prove once and for all if the discs are warped or not. From everything you've posted I suspect they are.

I, too, am struggling to see how boiled fluid can cause vibration. However a fluid change doesn't cost much or take very long. It's a very long shot but it might help.

Have a DTI around 3 feet from where I am sitting. Problem is the warp only shows when hot. I have had this before, the warp is usually within limits when cold, but really bad and of course unmeasurable when at working temperature. Definitely not boiled fluid as they will wobble when most of the system is still stone cold.

When the fluid is actually boiling, the pressure on the disks is quite low, so the pads are free to move much more than when the fluid is liquid, so that makes sense, but it would go back to working OK once cool enough to recondense.

As for fluid RBF600 is best stuff for track days IMO, but have never boiled the fluid so wont worry about it.

Find a fireman and borrow some flameproof gauntlets

Being sensible, of course I can see the warp would be exaggerated when hot, but I'm sure there would be some residual run-out that would still show when cold.

My nearly-new ZeroSixty / Mintex Extreme setup used to rub in a warped-disc stylee at the back, exactly as you describe - and no longer doesn't. It was fixed after a trip to the main dealer for its 3-year, end-of-warranty service. They did the rear caliper warranty mod, and also replaced my (only as old as the brakes) DOT5.1 brake fluid with boggo Skoda stuff. One or other of these things presumably fixed it - if it WAS the rear calipers, obviously that's no good to you but I don't know whether brake fluid choice would make any kind of difference?

Going to order a set of Zimmerman discs and see how I get on with them. Main concern for me is fitting new discs with used pads. Never even considered it before, should I worry?

Chris

Are there any bad grooves in your current discs (I don't mean the stylish ones that the manufacturer puts in, but the ones created by wear). If not, no, don't worry - unless the pads are nearly worn out anyway. You could flatten them out on some emery cloth or coarse wet and dry on a board first though if you're concerned.

An update to the warped disc problem.

Being extremely busy and not having time to order a set of new discs at the time, I tried removing and re torquing the wheels just in case it is a hat problem. This has made a big difference to the braking problem and the warp was gone. That was maybe 20,000 miles back and all is still well and the Extremes are still stopping the car really well.

Good to hear.

It's a shame they have been discontinued :(

Is that just for the Fabia? I cannot see them listed on the Mintex site, but dont remember them being listed before.

MR2 fitment is still listed, so when I come to replace the pads on that I will go Extremes all round. Not that the Toyota ones are too shabby.
