That wont help me as its had a new engine (after water ingestion !) and I want to know the new engines number. So where do I look for it ?

Jules.

Its stamped on the edge of the block near the gearbox iirc, trouble is you can't read it with the gearbox fitted.

IIRC its on the front of the bottom end just under the join with the cylinder head on a small machined area.

EDIT: lummox got there first :D

would a new engine actually come with a number stamped on it ?

a lot of the Ford engines don't , we should stamp them but don't due to lack of the correct toolage

If that was the case I would think that you have just seen a reconditioned engine - remember VAG engine plants don't always know where (which model/marque) a specific engine is going to be fitted into at the initial engine build stage - ie before anciliaries and mountings are fitted. So ALL brand new engines will be allocated a s/n during the assembly process. In later life this ability to pin down the engines age or build state might well affect what spare parts are suitable for it.
