Buying a VRS with 6K

Featured Replies

I'll introduce myself before i start asking you all questions i know you must have had a millions times. My name's Nick and I'm from the midlands, currently driving a Golf GTI

After looking at many many MANY different car's I've decided i want an Octavia VRS.

I have 6k to spend, as far as i can see I'll be looking at about 80-90k mark. Is there anything i should look out for on these before buying one? What goes regularly? what should i look for when i go to view one? and finally are the engines good for a few miles more as I'll be keeping it for at least a couple of years?

(I've had a good few cars so I'm not totally stupid when it comes to looking but just not sure what to look for on these lol)

I'm currently on my second VW golf and wanted a change so thought what better than another VW in a different body shell hehe.

Thanks in advance

P.S - Do you have any local meets or anything like that here? I used to show one of my older cars with another forum and they had meets every so often.

Welcome to Briskoda.

Where in the Midlands you from ?

Cam belt changes is the most important thing to look out for. Every 4 years or 60K.

There are a few common faults, but if you use the search these will all pop up.

Do a search here for:

Coil packs

Water pump

Boost hose leaks

Error code 17705

ARB (anti-roll-bar) bushes

Even though I've lived here 90% of my life it's not my most favorite of places, (seems to be full of scum bags.......oh did i say that out loud! lol)

You got MSN or anything mluton? i see you have VAG-COM ;)

I was born in Walsall

Welcome to Briskoda.

I got my Vrs for 6k with only 30k on it (2001). Looked at loads with higher milage but waiting paid out.

Mine is currently for sale on Pistonheads.;)

Little over 6k but I looked around a bit before I priced mine.

There are quite a few for sale between 7k - 9k, some with quite low mileage.

Under this price seems to be mainly higher mileage.

If you could stretch a little you will open the market up. if you are a cash buyer try and haggle!

Go for it as they are great cars,

Well i may be able to stretch to 6.5k but not sure yet as i'm waiting for mine to sell.

What are the engines good for millage wise?

There are lots around with over 100k with no problems.

like most modern engines if they are serviced as should be they will do 100k without missing a heat beat

Nor necessarily, I found one with 43k on a Y plate for £5400 last year. Keep your eyes open and a low miler should pop up.

Thanks for all the replies, you've sold it to me lol.....just got to find a decent one now! :s

To echo the others your budget doesn't automatically mean that you'll get a high mileage one. Mine was a bit overpriced but I paid £6500 for a 52 plate with 38k. The book price for that was nearer £6200 to £6300 ish IIRC.

I saw some tat on my travels (maybe my standards are too high :o ) and the next person who used the phrase "well you won't find a better one" or "well it is 4 years old" was going to get a smack. Thats why I jumped on the one I ended up with as it was in great condition. Basically what I'm saying is there are plenty of good ones out there but be prepared to see some rubbish whilst trying to find one :)

Heck yes!

I found some right bags of shine when i was looking for mine

6k should easily be able to buy a vrs with a lot less than 80/90k, I bought one 2 months ago for 5.3k that had done 47K miles. I live in the East Midlands and bought it from scotland so dont limit yourself the going local, I saw a few round the notts aread for the same price that were dogs frankly, I bought mine from a briskoda member so I was confident it had been well looked after.

I spent two months looking for a clean example, and during that time i looked at some right piles of crap its deff worth taking your time to find whats right for you, in the end i had to travel from pompey to dover to get mine but it was well worth it.

Same here as mine was 6K with under 40,000 miles 52 plate ;)

Just make sure it's got a good service history and the camblet has been done!

ha ha, that is a VERY nice example.

Shame i only have 6k for one :(

paid 4K for mine last month 51plate 48000, no problems whatsoever, just fitted the splt-r valve, vrrmmm tsssss, and only 30 miles from where i live! Hull (East Yorkshire)

Wanna sell it lol

I paid 6.5k for mine will 60k and all the mods you see on my sig. But like most people, looked at loads of "not so nice" ones first. lol.

I went one better than buying of a forum member, i bought a forum sponsors demo car, lol ;) (i know, i know, i cheated)

Keep up the search and be patiant :)

Regards

Garry
