Help get a tailgate from Rotherham to Newcastle!!

Featured Replies

Hi All

I have bought a tailgate off a guy on ebay to replace my rusted mess same colour and everything. However although there was an option for paying for posting it the seller's usual delivery service has let him down and won't deliver it. :(

Does anyone know any decent delivery mechanism that will deliver between the two points? I tried a local delivery company who quoted £75 due to dimensions.

I have paid £40 delivery costs so any firm known who will do this will be appreciated.

You could surely drive that with that £40??

I reckon i'd be about 50 miles off running out doing the full round trip from lancaster on that much fuel....

Just a suggestion, but if its not practical.

Have you not tried someone such as DHL, or City Link.. have had friends use they before and think they're pretty reasonable...

Hell, I could do it from here in Cambs for £40 in diesel (just  )

Make it £60 and we've got a deal! ;)

i used to go to bedlington station (yon side of newcastle )and back on a tank of juice from donny

Take a set of tools and change it when you collect it.

Im sure that when you collect it the person there will know a local scrappy that you can dump your old one with?

Right

I have looked at all options and due to the dimensions no-one will pick it up for less than £70!!

I measured up the felly and i reckon that there is a slight possibility that i could slide it in with the back seats removed but didn't want to risk it.

I then thought about hiring a trailer (as i have a witter towbar) but they all close on saturday afternoon's and they quoted £35 for a day or point blank refused due to the dimensions!!

The solution (i hope) is in the form of one of them new transit connect diesels. Basically it is gonna cost 32 quid to hire from friday night to saturday evening. I also noted that they are the most economical van in their class with 40mpg on the combined cycle and 50-60 on the motorway. I reckon i am only gonna have to put 5 gallons in at most so it should cost between 20-25 quid in fuel. £57 in all which is expensive i guess but i got the tailgate for buttons and it is the right colour. Plus why flog the guts out of my car!!

The guy i bought it off will also be returing the £40 i paid him for delivery so all in all around £17 more than i expected to pay. Fair do's it is a pain to drive to Rotherham but you haven't seen the state of my tailgate!!! :D I am also gonna try and chuck my old one in a scrap metal yard weighed in (50p will come my way ha ha). I will take my back window out though - anyone need one?

Lets hope he is in!!!

I fully intend to bounce the van off its limiter!!

Mind it will probably be limited to 75mph so that shouldnt be too hard!!

Errr, surely, as posted earlier, change the tailgate for the good one when you get there, remove glass from old one, and break the old tailgate up, or bend it in half, to get it in the back.

Sorted, surely.

mr grumpy. stop applying logic to the situation! we cant handle thinking on that level in hear.

For the sake of £17 i don't think that there is anything numpty about it at all Mr Grumpy.

I will be collecting my £40 i paid him to deliver it in the first place and will not have the problem of trying to remove a rear window, bend metal, swop number plates, locks etc on someone else's driveway 200 miles from home.

I live 200 yards from a recycling centre so i can chuck the remains in there in my own good time

At last my replacement tailgate has been fitted.

I carried the remains of the old one down to the tip this morning and it was a right mess. Basically it was rotten as i had thought. The replacement is bang on colour and completely rust free, although i have been downgraded from a GLi to an LXi!!! :P

I tried to get the back window out from the old one but it smashed so no rear screen for sale. However i do now have a spare rear wiper motor!!
