Do i need a new fly wheel?

Featured Replies

Just been speaking with my machanic about the fitting of my new sachs clutch. He has said that the chances are im gunna need a new duel mass flywheel? which can b expensive aparently.

This is all very new to me so can someone shed some light on the subject?

Has anyone here fit a new clutch and not a new fly wheel?

Any info would be great.

the flywheel will need replacing if the surface the clutch sits on is badly damaged , i.e. heat damage from clutch slip

it will also need replacing if the remap you are running has too much torque and you use that torque from low revs , causing the vibration i think we've all discussed before in some of your previous threads , the flywheel can "bust" inside the bellhousing due to the abuse (Shifty has had one go the other week)

however there is no reason for it to be replaced if you take it easy and not boot it from silly low revs

the flywheels do have a certain amount of free play in them , even when new , so maybe your mechanic was concerned by this play ?

I'm far from being any sort of expert, but if the DMF is not blued, ie showing signs of abuse/damage it should be fine with a sachs organic clutch. If you go Kevlar, it needs machining.

A steel SMF is an excellent upgrade, if you can live with a bit of vibration, and may be a bit less expensive than a DMF (you may want to check prices)...

If you need a slightly-used DMF in excellent nick, Jason has my OEM setup for sale that I removed at about 18K kms. No trace of blueing.....

To check flywheel if fecked rotate the inner mass anticlockwise and mark where it stops then rotate back if movement more or less than 15-30mm its fecked buy another

Ok, cheers guys, Its not essential to change it when changing clutch then? He's not had a look at it yet, but i guess he'l no if it needs changing.

Whats the benifits or a steel SMF? why is it an good upgrade? (sorry iv not got a clue about these things!)

I think its supposed to be good practice to change the clutch slave cylinder while in there as well, wvwn if the original one is fine.....

Good luck!

looked on awesome but could seem to find anything

I was advised against the SMF as it will increase the vibration through the drive train and it'll have an effect on the reliability too. I'd like to have a go in a car that had an SMF before going ahead to see if it was something I could live with. Cars used to be fine with SMF's before the DMF was introduced!

Post the results of the swap if you do it as I'd like know how you get on with it.

Spoke to my machanic he he says it would make no difference at all, is this right? I was under the impression the car would b quicker?

It wouldn't be quicker i it were a similar weight. It might rev more freely using a lightened and balance fly but revs would also drop quicker as it wouldn't have the same rotational inertia as the heavier unit. It will make some difference to the "smoothness" of the engine/transmission as the DMF absorbs a fair bit of vibration so I've been told. The only thing that would make it quicker would be if it were lighter. Like everything there is always some trade off!

the revs will pick up quicker due to less weight in the SMF , so there should in theory be perceptable increase in performance felt , car might not be quicker though

Sorry I missed your posts - I ordered it via Forge from Awesome - complete Helix setup - don't remember the cost atm...

It does vibrate more, only at idle with clutch out in neutral. Less refined but it does rev faster and doesnt drop too much. Went with a steel one as Ally would have been too light....

I like it, and if you plan on bullet-proofing the tranny for major mods in the future it's good. Although Jason still has a DMF with a kevlar clutch....
