Shaking steering wheel?!!?!?

Featured Replies

Took my car to have laser 4 wheel allignment and balancing as the steering wheel was vibrating a bit. Once the garage was done the wheel shook more than when it was taken in! I have 2 slightly buckled wheels (Ont the back) which should not effect the steering wheel.

The mechanic assured me all the wheels are balanced to '0' but how can the car be worse now than when i took it in! Is at its worst when using 5th and accelorating from 60-70 (75ish) Dont usually use fith at these speeds but for the purposes of testing the wheel i did. It also shakes when braking. It has never been this before.

Any suggestions?????

cheers :thumbdwn:

Either buckled front wheels (how did you buckle back ones without doing front as well?) or warped brake discs maybe.

did they have the wheel balancing machine set up right for your wheels?

exactly what I would reply...... I had an old fiat croma turbo once with these symptoms, 4wheel align , and balance had no effect, mechanic said "your wheels must be bent, no other reason for it to do it!" bought some second hand alloys, fitted them and it disappeared! was deffo bent wheels.......

shaking under braking, could be warped discs... (or still a bent wheel!)

front wheels got dented on pot holes so moved to back. I will mention the above mentioned symptoms. Just dont see how it could go from vibrating a bit, balance and allignment done then it shakes a huge amount! Will Skoda garage look and diagnose as a freebe or will i need to get my wallet out.

Lost faith in the mechanic who did balancing etc when said maybe something to do with suspension!!!

This will sound silly but move the rear tyres to the front, it will work.

but the rear tyres are on the buckled wheels , so all the tyres will need to be removed from all the wheels , so the buckled wheels stay on the rear

Im not convinced it is a problem with the wheels, i truly believe this grease monkey did something wrong, think i will go to my skoda garage for a check up...soooooooooo annoying!

Could be a problem with front suspension bushes or balljoint. If bushes are soft, the wheels splay or pinch under braking / running / acceleration and as the force of the splay or pinch is overcome, they spring back, so the cycle begins again. Can cause wobbles on some cars.

Chris

Console bushes are worn.

Had the front wheels balanced by kwik fit and has substantially reduced the shaking through the steering wheel but still shakes a bit. It is noticable, put it that way. How much to replace the bushes?

Cheers

I ahve the same problem on mine, had it a while too. Am also curious how much the console bushes are and how long it takes to fit.

Console bushes are worn.

Oh oh! BINGO for me I reckon. Was wondering why the wheel only shook on acceleration, yet is fine in a straight line. I was really worried I'd buckled my front wheels as they're really nice rare wheels and I'd struggle to find replacements for them.

It is during acceloration and braking,Mainly accelorationg in a gear too high e.g. foot down in 5th going 60. It shakes from 60-90 and at no slower speed than 60mph...Annoying fairly expensive lesson learnt...I hope!

This the same for you guys Devontopia and IRF?

Anyone know how much to fit new ones?

that sounds more like the DMF vibration due to the torque load , try using less throttle or a different gear , 4th maybe better

yeah 4th is fine! but it never used to shake even when accelorating in 5th and now it does?!?!?

Mine does it in all gears using even half throttle, so I know it's not DMF vibration for me. Console bushes sound more logical, especially as it was an MOT advisory at the last one.

When I plant it in 5th or 6th doing 50+mph the steering shakes. Once I'm past 110+ it doesnt seem to shake as much when accelerating.

Agreed, past 95mph almost perfectly still, is driving me mad...Am calling a decent lad at skoda tomorrow and will get his oponion on this.

DMF vibration then , if the bushes were faulty you would always get the vibration at the same speed whatever gear you are in , the DMF is being loaded with the extra torque of your Revo remap , especially when full throttle is applied at low revs

what is DMF vibration????

what is DMF vibration????

plenty about it on here , DMF stands for dual mass flywheel , this basically damps out the engine vibrations from the gearbox , whats happening is when you full throttle at low revs , the DMF cannot damp the torque from the engine hence the vibration through the car/steering , the DMF will probably eventually fail if continued abuse occurs , then its kerching and a large bill

Is it vibration or wobbling? The DMF will be a harsh buzzing vibration, felt through the shell of the car as well. Shot bushes will show under power because the front wheels are normally trying to toe in or out under power on a front driver. If the bushes are shot, it would be the case that it gor worse under acceleration, or less under braking or slowing.

Chris

Mine definately isn't the DMF. The steering shakes when accelerating at high speeds in pretty much most gears. Its a tad impractical accelerating from 50-90 in second or third lol. The steering wheel vibrates only, its not that bad but is very noticeable. You can even see the hands vibrating slightly with the steering wheel. If it was the DMF then the whole car would shake and you get that deep buzzing tone through the car.

The DMF would vibrate relative to engine speed and load not road speed I'd have thought. Mine did this until the other day when I had the console bushes replaced and it's alot better. No remap for me, just standard.

Also, why would the DMF vibrating cause the steering wheel to judder left and right like the wheels are out of balance? That would cause a vibration throughout the whole car I'd have thought?

For the DMF vibration to happen I'd imagine it would be rev / load relative so you could replicate it at a lower speed in a lower gear to match what happens at 80mph in 6th. So we're talking say 50mph in 5th and 40mph in 4th or something, but this doesn't happen.

Anyway, have the console bushes checked (mine didn't look bad apparently but replacing them has cured a lot of issues including creaking when acelerating and braking) and make sure your wheels are balanced.

My issues before were the steering wheel would judder if I booted it at 80mph in 6th. If I eased off the throttle the judder would cease.
