Why cant you........

Featured Replies

Okay, With all the emisions cars release and global warming and such I had an Idea and I want to know if anyone knows why it cant be done,

If a cars exhaust was directed to the air intake, the engine would not run as all the oxygen would be burnt and therefore no combustion could take place,

but what if the air could be charged or injected with oxygen while keeping it in a closed loop from air intake to exhaust,

Yes I am incredibly sad to think of this:O ,

But I bet there will be someone who can answer this:D

Too expensive, I work with medical grade oxygen for one of my jobs and its very expensive. It probably is better to just exhaust it and get fresh stuff in.

Though, do engines work better in the countryside as opposed to built up towns? I'm thinking air quality here.

I think the heat might be an issue for starters. Think about how much heat an exhaust system dissipates.

You already have this in a small quantity via EGR but this is for emissions and exhaust temperature control. There are the other products of combustion to think of like CO, CO2 and NOx.

But if you redirect the exhaust into the engine (as an EGR valve would do) then you're comprmising performance. If you then inject that with oxygen, you'd still be worse off than just using fresh air, wouldn't you, and the exhaust gases would still need to go somewhere as they can't be burnt further?

Chris

EGR already circulates a proportion of exhast gas into the intake under certain conditions.

If it was as simple as you think the it would have been done already! :P

A closed loop couldn't be achieved - you're adding O2 and fuel into a system, the pressure will build up continually, it needs to be released!

On a similar note, why don't they use a dynamo?
