My lovely car's trip to Germany

Featured Replies

I have just returned with my husband from a week's trip to southern Germany in my beloved (02) Octavia 1.9Td ambiente hatchback . She's behaved perfectly the whole time and we only topped up the fuel tank (diesel) twice. It was nowhere near empty either time, on an 1200+ mile journey. some long bits of which were driven at around 100mph on German autobahns, where it was legal. I had the average mpg indicator on all the time and mostly it read just above or just below 60. (58-62mpg) At a couple of stopping places, I overheard very complimentary comments about the enormous boot space. Whilst in Germany, we also travelled in my cousin's all leather interior, all bells and whistles new Passat, but I love my car and wouldn't swap her if I could afford to. We hit "Dig up Germany" week and drove a lot of kilometers sandwiched between trucks through the roadworks. The Octavia remained rock steady and was not pushed about by the turbulence from those horrors. I don't know how many road signs we missed that the trucks blocked from view. I like the ban on trucks overtaking between 06:00 and 10:00. Those drivers must be watching their clocks, because at 10:05, half of them pulled out to overtake the others.

I just love my car.

glad to hear use had a good safe trip...

You married  - damn :D

Good the Octy isn't pushed around by turbulence - can get very worrying. One car we once had crossed a full lane's width once because of a crosswind on the motorway - luckily no one was in that lane.

Married 37 years to the same guy. Quite an old lady now

Pleased you enjoyed the trip, and mildly annoyed about local driving conditions, given that you were getting better mpg in a 100mph cruise than I can get trying to cruise at half that speed!

I'm a mere youngster of 30 years 'experience'

Good on yer

Nice post , Ive never driven abroad , Id love to at some point.

Were you in Bavaria for the Oktoberfest?

Those roadworks will be running until October 2008 in places and yes they did suck, but I was down there too and did it on three tanks of fuel and going a fair bit quicker than 100 when it was legal. :D

Having driven 2000+ miles abroad in the last few days I found myself driving on the correct (read right) side of the road here before promptly fixing my error when was turning onto minor roads.

Yes we were in Bavaria, but decided to give Oktoberfest a miss, as my husband can't walk much. We took a trip on the rack railway up the Zugspitze instead.

Did you spot a Silver MK II Octy from the UK on your travels?
