Boxter - how fast?

Featured Replies

And not a very pleasant place to be either!

Really? I quite enjoyed my time out in one. :D

I think the Boxter is a nice place to be as well  Good place to sit and watch the back of my car.

Having witnessed your driving, I would prefer to keep your car in front of me :P:rofl:

Chris

I love the Boxster personally. But I could only afford an old basic one, and I couldn't live with that! :(

Its not old, its 2003! Cheeky git.

But atleast I own it, and I'm not pretending to be anything I'm not. :P (Which lets face it, the poverty Porsche would be doing just that!)

But even in 2.7 guise, the "poverty Porsche" is good to drive, spot on driving position with pedals made for heel 'n' toe, fantastic handling and a decent amount of power for a 2 seater sports car. It's not really pretending to be anything it's not .... it's not like it's a Daewoo Matiz with a Porsche badge ;)

Chris

'Poverty' Porsche is £32,000!

I'd have one tomorrow:D

You can get a 1998 2.5 Boxster with about 90k for £9k now...

But I'd want a facelift 2.7.

I'd settle for a facelift :o

Change the lights and wheels and 90% of people will never know its an older model.

whilst we're on the subject of poverty porsche's... has anybody ever driven an old school late 90's 944?? a geezer up the road is selling one with a blown up engine and i was thinking about it :o

The guy wouldn't let me drive it, but I've passengered in an '89 944 turbo. Seemed to handle nicely and really flew once you got the turbo spinning. Are you thinking of repairing the engine or replacing?

My mate had a F plate red 944 he got at an auction and I had a go before it was sold on. Good fun but very slow (for what I was used to) - He then got another one with a wider body on it, but the same 2.5 engine, which he ended up replacing, and the car was sold on again. Good fun, but not as awe inspring to drive I reckon, as perhaps a 911 carrera from the same era, or even an older 911 RS. :)

Now, Where would I start with a blown up engine....

If we're talking old Porsche I'd rather have a late 928S

You'd probably leave it broken and get the car resprayed instead? ;)

Not done well in life?

I'd be gutted too.... :D

I was looking at 944's about 18 months ago, the 2.5 is IIRC a fairly weak engine, 160bhp or thereabouts? The 2.7 8v 170bhp but a much torquier engine and apparently is a much better drive. Move into S2 and Turbo territory, and you're looking at 210bhp and 230bhp respectively I think (or thereabouts), although 20 years I would have thought would have a toll on that original power output unless the engine has been rebuilt.

When I did my research it would seem that unless you've got fairly deep pockets, the 2.7 is the way to go - torquier low down and actually more driveable than the 16v versions, but without the excessive running costs of the S2 and Turbos.

:)

I'm a greedy so and so and have a Octy VRS and a BoxSter, note the spelling, and I reckon that the Boxster will initially pull away quicker but the octy will catch. The Porsche has naturally got the top end speed but both are the Ducks Nuts.:)

Mr Gooch drives a Vauxhall now, so he might stand a bit more of a chance against a Boxster ;)
