The coolant level warning light on my 03 octavia vrs keeps coming on. I have checked and the level is fine.

It mostly happens in the mornings and on cold days

Is this just a sensor fault or something more sinister?

Thanks in advance for help and advice

Don't think this is a known issue, so I'd say sensor. You sure you don't have a leak? Did you use the correct stuff?

Is there any history you need to share hmm!? ;-)

I would check the coolant level is up to the upper line when the engine is cold.

The bottle will show less coolant when the engine is cold and more when the engine is warm.

I had an 03 Octavia vRS and mine used to do this as well, also only on cold mornings. Switch off and then on again and all was well.

There was another thread last winter on this very topic and it seemed that this was a fairly common problem (although not really a problem, more an irritation).

I notice your a new member, perhaps you have my old car, Red?

As said as above I had very same problem until I checked it one cool morning & found it ever so slightly low!

No i have a silver vrs. I have found that switching the ignition on and off does work but im the type of guy who cant live with these things. It drives me nuts when anything goes wrong with my car. I know i should get over it but it just really annoys me

My drivers seat squeeks as well arrggghh!!!!!

Usually looking at past threads about this, the sensor is to blame which is located inside the expansion tank. A new tank doesnt cost that much as thats the only way to replace it as its built in.

The exact same thing happened to me. Get the collant bottle replaced and all should be well.

I had the same problem and a replacement tank is cheap, but it's much easier to stick a long thin screwdriver into the tank and scrape the crud off the two pins sticking down. I've heard of other people having success with the same technique.

The problem appears to be that the sensor measures the resistance between the two pins, but crud on the pins changes the resistance and gives a false reading.

I asked my local garage whether it mattered that the crud would end up in the coolant and he said it would be fine. There seemed to be very little came off my pins - mostly just bubbles - but it cured the problem about six months ago and it hasn't returned since.

i had the same problem with my mk1 vrs last winter. Went to the garage several times and they said it was a known fault and nothing to worry about. Turning the iginition off and on again normally cured it (on very cold mornings it would take several attempts to work). I have since replaced the car for a mk 2 vrs and can only assume that the new owner is probably experiencing the same issue now it is getting colder (I doubt the garage would have changed the expansion tank before selling it on).

Scrap my comment, I now have the same problem, which is apparently due to the sender in the bottle. will cost you anywhere between £10 and £15 and details can be found on this forum
