Why no DPF on the 140TDI ??

Featured Replies

Curiously, the Octavia/VAG 140 TDI motor does not come with any option for a DPF, only the 170hp version getting this. Why so?

I'm guessing 170 owners are by definition expected to plant their right pedals firmly on their collective mats a lot of the time so produce more soot than the sedate :turtle2: 140 drivers, but is it true to conclude the 140 is just not a puffer?? The Focus 2.0 TDCi now comes with the DPF option and watching Mondeo 128 TDCi's frequently blocking out the sun with clouds of muck I can understand why.

Are Octavia 140 TDi types blessed with superior smoke-free wheels or just denied the benefits (?) of the DPF?

PS. Do DPFs help when the MOT smoke test is conducted?

The DPF is on the new PD140 I think, but even if it isn't then tbh I would want a car without one.

They are a serviceable part and not a cheap one at that.

Check out the problems people are having with DPFs (especially short journey drivers) across all manufacturers and you wouldn't to buy a motor with one.

If it really bothers you then it can be fitted as an optional extra - More trouble than it's worth IMHO and not as eco friendly as they'd like you to believe.

DPF's are even more pointless than the catalyst on a diesel. At least the cat generally works and stays working.

I would love to know what the emissions are like when the DPF is undergoing a regen cycle.

There would be major hassle if the 140 had the DPF, the more sedate drivers would have time shares next door to their local dealer.

I wouldn't say Cat's and DPF's are pointless as they do good things for the image of the diesel car. They seem to have cat's sorted, reliable DPF's with BluTec will surely follow.

Pumpe Deuse and DPF's don't make good bed partners. Another reason why VAG is jumping into bed with CR.

Saying that, I wish mine had a DPF, it's embarrassing when hooning it off the lights. Smokey is an understatement.

Where would I get one of those Stu? I'm a high mileage mainly motorway driver and would love to lose the puff of smoke on the slip roads.

Why you would want to I don't know but here you go -

17095.attach

17096.attach

Looks like a world of pain.

Would you need to tweak/change the ECU for the DPF?

Hmm, I think I'll pass on that - looks expensive. i just get fed up with all the smoke. I'm sure the older diesels I've had only got smokey in old age.

Blu-tec, isn't that one which involves wee?

Yeah the urea based additive. Sounds good doesn't it.

Does that mean the blu-tec cars pee all over everyone else? :D

:rolleyes::D

Better get some toilet bleach to keep the exhaust smelling pine fresh!!

I was surprised that the Scout I had as a courtesy car had a DPF (the warning light came on whilst trogging around in stop-start London traffic), but the car I bought (a standard 2-wheel drive combi) didn't despite having the same 140PS TDI engine.

My conclusion was that DPFs are fitted to the cars that need them to meet the EU4 emissions requirements, but that is a guess. i.e. the standard car meets the requirements without DPF.

I was disappointed to begin with, but actually its another mtce liability, and no doubt increases the back pressure in the exhaust.

Cheers,

Les.

Hmmm... According to te options codes my 4x4 TDi 140 has a particulate filter!... so some of the 140 TDI Octavias do get them!... possibly asLondon Les says, depending upon whether theyneed them or not to meet regs?

That may be correct, but it does mean they fit the vRS TDi with the neat twin exhaust like the TFSi so that (at least when parked) there is no discernable difference between them.

Nor is there when planting one's right foot :) on the motorway, as the vehicles behind can still be seen in the mirror (tho' only as rapidly deminishing shapes :rofl::rofl:)
