Installing my MP3 Kit today.

Featured Replies

Thanks for that:), I did find the pins to be ok with a bit of modding to them and all is well, I have a working aux in for mp3 or whatever.

update for first post on something new today which has improved the quality etc.

  • 3 weeks later...

Could the wires be connected to the cd changer unit in the boot area to save taking out the HU?

No, the aux in is on different connecions on the back of the headunit. The headunit is dead easy to remove, should take no more than a couple of mins to get out.

there are four screws hidden by plastic clips on the front, takes couple of minutes to get it out and slightly longer to get it back in. if your local to me id be happy to install it as it shouldnt take more than 15 minutes.

Sorry my question was confusing. I realise that if I connected a lead at the rear of the CD changer in the boot I would not be accessing the AUX connection. What I wondered was if this would allow me to "piggy-back" onto the CD changer signal to the HU and thus play my ipod/mp3 player through the HU with CD changer selected as the music source?

I have decided to give it a go (providing I can get the CD changer out, why do they need these fancy keys to release it?) I will let you know how it goes but am not sure how I can find out which wires are which unless rear of changer has a label

updated again, found that i could get the parts even cheaper on ebay

You don't need to go near the CD changer, just take the head unit out and go at the wires there.

I got a bunch of spade connectors, cut the L, R and ground wires from the CD changer, crimped male and female spade connectors to the ends of the cut wires and then added wires to a 3.5mm jack socket and a switch - I've attached a diagram of what I've done in my car. The switch I used has 12 connections on the back for spade connectors and changes 4 independent wiring connections at a time (I found it in Maplin, no idea of part number). I've used three of the four connections for the Left, Right and Ground for the jack plug connection. Using spade connections allows all the extra wiring to be removed and the CD changer reconnected directly if I ever want to remove this function. The switch to change between the CD changer and jack plug and the plug are in two button blanks over the ashtray, so again it can all be removed to stock leaving no trace.

The wiring diagram is here - I've shown wiring for one of the three connections needed:

you dont even need to join to any cd in leads, the wiring diagram on the first page shows the three pins you need to attach to and then you can keep you cd changer working in case you ever need it again or for when you sell the car.

:Hi smstext

thanks for the great thread. I'm a useless newbie and liked the look of your mod. I spotted this on youtube

But need clarification (just so I can get the process right in my head)

After looking at vrstu's images for pin out diagrams (thanks vrstu) for the stream I am not 100% sure where to put the 3 wires.

http://www.octavia-vrs.com/images/images/mfd2/stream_pinouts.jpg

please could you advise on this and also confirm that the stream (in 05 octavia II) will play music from MP3 input.

just to let you know I couldn't access some of the pictures on your original thread.

Thanks for all help.

Useless newbie

stream mp3 iirc started in 2007 so a 2005 will not be a stream mp3 but a plan stream which does not play mp3's.

like the video, might actually do that next actually,

Thanks for all this write-up, it was exactly what I wanted! However...

When I tried the modification on my '06 Octavia II with an ordinary Stream (not the Stream MP3) it did not work... Here are the steps I followed:

Since my car did not come with the blue connector, nor a CD changer, I ordered the connector through a local dealer (part 3B7 035 447 A). I also got the cables there. Now I have tried putting the cables in different positions (1 - 7 - 8 or also 2 - 3 - 8 as my radio does not have the connections for Aux-in. Unfortunately, none of this works. See attached image for the back of my radio.

Has anyone succesfully made a MP3 modification with an ordinary Stream radio, without spending £££ ? Or is this just impossible? I have read somewhere that my last chance would be to simulate a CD changer. Is this a difficult task?

Thanks for your advice!

I also have a stream in '06 version.

AUX will not work without CDchanger. The only way to get external audio in, is by a CDchanger simulator. Some years ago, I read about a project where they assembled these devices themselves.

Another solution is buying a complete device, which can even handle USB storage to play mp3, stream sees the device as a CDchanger.

have just updated the above with a new youtube link thats been mentioned and a write up to my new mp3 lead location which makes it look a tidier set up.

Hi all,

I have just implemented psycholist's solution (thanks for that) on my Octy '06. I have a CDC with the pre-2007 HU which means AUX pins are not connected.

As per psycholist's description, I used the 3.5mm socket from Maplin:

3.5mm Stereo Chassis Socket : 3.5mm Stereo Jacks : Maplin

and fully insulated crimp terminals (female):

Fully Insulated Crimp Terminal - ?Lucar? Female : Crimp Terminals : Maplin

the red is enough

then the male connectors:

Insulated Crimp Terminal - ?Lucar? Male : Crimp Terminals : Maplin

the red is enough

and finally the 4-pole switch:

4-Pole Type : Toggle Switches : Maplin

I used 3 different colours for wires: black (GND), red®, white (L). I prepared the 4-pole switch for soldering. Using 3 connectors of the 4.

The row in the middle goes to the HU, the row on each side goes to respectively: the CDC and the 3.5mm jack socket.

I used female and male connectors in order to reconnect HU and CDC in the future if needed.

I attached photos of how it looks once installed.

The longest step for me was to adapt the switch to the blank button, but Dremel is your friend in that case ;-)

Obviously I tested and it works well keeping the CDC available and using whatever you want on the 3.5 mm input.

HTH.
