How to convert bhp

Featured Replies

Does anybody know who to convert bhp from the flywheel to the wheels.

Cheers -tdi vrs-

Transmission losses are usually around 15% for a FWD car.

So the BHP at the wheels will be the BHP at the flywheel -15%.

it's a case of subtracting transmission losses, and is not an exact science but they are typically around 10-12%. the only exact way is rolling road

The machine measures at the wheels though, and estimates at the flywheel yes?

The only place it can measure is at the wheels. It estimates the flywheel power using the coast-down run. There's an interesting article on that here.

I am still confused, as i thought that power would be at the wheels.

That is an interesting article, and perhaps explains some of the stuff I've heard about PD130 engines producing figures up near 145bhp standard...

a normal dyno measures wheel power as accurately as the operatpr wants it to then guesses at the flywheel power using a little known formula of wheel power+transmission losses-number wheels * level of window tint and allthat is then divided by the amount of clouds in the sky but multiplied by the amount of people living in your house.

HTH :)

dyno generated fly figures ain't worth a thing, only thing remotely worthwhile is wheel figures but then these are affected by tyre pressure, tyre temp, angle of the steering, weight in the car, temp of the gear box oil etc etc etc
