you have to pay, 5 email addresses, 1gb storage and 100meg of webspace is £2 a month, you can set up your own email and/or web server though as below

Can I set my own email or web server up while using the Be network?

Yes, providing you only use our services for legal purposes - please see our terms and conditions. If you would like to use your own email server, you’ll need to use our SMTP server for outgoing mail. Please contact us directly for more information. If you would like port 25 unblocked all you need to do is order a static IP from us and your port will be unblocked.

Thanks Mike, I did see that bit, eventually :) So do you get any email functionality as standard then? If need be, I can survive on one address for the time being.

As posted above Samknows...

Samknows - WNCSN exchange

You can check out the details for a local exchange (A Fast Show Grrrreat!) which shows my Chester exchange is BE enabled and being very close I should get close to the maximum...:)

I'm waiting for Be to activate me and I'm coming from Zen so they have a lot to live up to. Plus net have been sh1te to my relatives though, with outright lies including the good old It's a BT fault even though I can see their network from my PC.

I've heard an increasing number of bad service stories from Plusnet Mark, and coupled with the seemingly gradual reduction in the quality of service, it seems like the right time to move.

Let me know how the migration process goes...

Steve

Interesting reading this. A friend of mine is looking at changing his ISP and someone at work recommended Be on Saturday . As we are quite close to the exchange (I think its less than 1K up the road) he could get pretty much the full speed, lucky git!.

Good to get a few other people who are recommending the service too, I think I'll suggest it to him.

I used to work for an ISP, so when they spun me that line I had already mentioned that I used to work for one I had a good idea where the problem was..

They have also insisted on e-mailing my relatives for extra details when the problem was that the DSL connection was dead. That incident left the relatives without stable DSL for about 2-3 months even after many phone calls and even e-mails from myself explaining they would have to contact them by phone.

On the Be front things seem to be running smoothly so far (touched wood), so I'll let you know how it goes and if i disappear for 2 weeks, you know it went badly.

Well, off we go - MAC code requested :)

5yrs without a change - here's hoping it goes smoothly

Steve

Up, Running almost no problems.

I say almost because the BeBox hasn't made a show yet. Parcelfarce being truly wonderful have apparently tried to deliver twice, but neither time did they bother to leave a card.

There depot is miles away, so I'm lucky that my current router is a good one.

Still getting 1Mb up and just shy of 8Mb down. As the crow flies I'm about 2km from the exchange and the cable length is 6km :(

Still so far so good.

Good to hear - also useful that you're not bound to using their supplied router, as I'll look to use my existing too.

My progress with them is progressing nicely too, with an advised changeover date of the 25th.

How do you know about the cable length? Is there a way of actually finding out how far data has to travel to the exchange?

Steve

Be told me when I signed up what speed I should expect because I was over 6km from the exchange.

It's fine as it is, but if they haven't mentioned it to you I'd guess you will get pretty good speed from them.

On the router front it needs to be ADSL2+ and capable of doing RFC1483 (I think that is the right RFC).

Mine is a draytek

You are approximately 487 metres from the exchange

Unfortunately Be is not available in your area yet. :(

Your PSTN service is due to be migrated during Oct-Dec 2009

There is currently no 21CN migration date for your IP services

Anyone know what PSTN is ?

PSTN is the public switched telephone network (ie the phone network)..... The migration is presumably over to BT's new visionary 21CN.

Well I'll be damned! All up and running ;)

Got a text and email that the service was active today, right on time, still no sign of the BeBox though - apparently they're having problems with their delivery partner.

Took me a while to get through on the phone, but then got settings for my current router. Switched to those and away I went :)

Only comment I'd make is that a copy of your connection settings should be available in 'Member Centre' on their website somewhere, for reference if nothing else. I appreciate most people will never need them, but still...

Running a 10.8Mb download speed and 1.3Mb upload, according to my router. Will hit a few of the speed test places later.

Cheers,

Steve

No ****...

Parcelfarce - tried to deliver and left a car, next day tried again and left another card.

Guess what no cards, but i had been told the info by BE who gave me a tracking number.

A call to parcelfarce and they "tried" twice and left cards. Anyway I explained this wasn't the case and arranged to collect it myself form the depot in the middle of nowhere useful.

Get to the depot after work and get stuck in rush hour traffic only to find they sent it out for delivery again. Spoke to manager who said they would divert to a PO near work and when i asked what the charge was he said none. I said nothing at all he said yes.

Go to PO to collect, they want money so I told them to keep the parcel and then proceeded to phone parcelfarce and explain they would get it back and that the could do what the f**k they liked with it because i wouldn't be in as i explained and I wouldn't be collecting it again as they already wasted my time and fuel.

I phoned BE and the woman in India really wasn't helpful until a few choice words were said in Hindi at which point she became helpful and are now chasing their fulfilment company who will chase parcelfarce.

I'd never ever send a package with these cretins as they can't even apologise for being incompetent.

And breathe Mark, breathe :D

Didn't realise it was as bad for them as using Parcelforce though!

Oh well, I'm not really too fussed as the free router was a bonus anyway.

Absolutely no excuse for that sort of behaviour from Parcel Force though :finger:

Cheers,

Steve

Parcelfarce cost me a couple of hours of wasted time and about £10 of fuel.

That plus if you don't hand the router back at the end they charge you £100, otherwise i wouldn't bother about it.

Yep true, did read the T&Cs.

really sorry to hear about the issues your having with the router delivery (after all it was my recommendation)

I completely agree with the router settings comment, should be available online. My first and only ticket was asking for router settings so i could use my existing one.

Wardy, whats the speed like compared to previous providers?

Mike

Mike - about 3Mb up on Plusnet. Hovered around 6.5-7Mb with them.

Steve

Mark - have you had an email from Be regarding the router delivery issues?

Steve

is this through a bt line or cable?
