Changing gears

Featured Replies

Okay, silly question I know, but interested to see what people's opinion is:

I've often been told that changing up through the gears quickly results in better economy, i.e. low revs = less fuel. Makes sense. Also, diesel engines obviously generate torque pretty low down in the range so I would think you want to change up fairly early to make the most of that.

So on my (totally standard) Fabia vRS I tend to change up fairly quickly, especially as all the torque comes pretty low down.

However, I have also read (could have been on here) that booting your car from, say 16000, revs can do your engine a fair bit of damage over a long period of time.

So who says that I drive well, and who says that I drive badly? ;)

All opinions welcome.........

I tend to change up quite early alright when I'm just cruising around, probably change around 2,000-2,200 revs but don't give it more than 10-25% throttle. Using this method I find the most efficient. Flooring it under 2,000rpm puts a lot of pressure on the clutch as the turbo begins to spool up so isn't advisable.

16000 revs on (almost) any engine will cause a fair bit of damage over a short period of time ;)

From what i can make out, its ok to drive with the revs low, as long as you are not labouring the engine.

Booting it from 1600rpm will kill the DMF, and also place extra stress on engine components...

with normal driving i tend to change at 2500 to 2750 which reduces the wear on clutch etc and also allows an instant response in power should you need it,

also no smoke at all at these revs, MPG is about 53 according to computer
