Specs Cameras on the M5 near Exeter

Featured Replies

After much searching on here failed to get me any relevant hits , I thought I'd ask the question here in the hope that a local (jason maybe ;)) would be able to answer this for me.

I took a trip to exeter on sunday, updated my talex before we left and set a cruise speed of gps 74 up the motorway. (God I hate driving that slow :()

At one point after tiring of not passing some other traffic at a reasonable rate I put my boot down and sailed past to tuck back in and resume cruise speed - not long after this I saw the signs for the specs average zone; however the talex didn't warn me at all about this for the entire journey (both ways!) and the first camera I spotted was numbered 10.

The numbers increased each camera I passed, yet on the way back (at gps 70 this time!) I noticed the numbers going back down (as expected) but again stopping at 10.

So, WTF is that all about? And why no talex warning, surely they'd be listed or am I right in thinking I've read something on here before (hence the search) that they were only temporary of something :confused:?

Anyone local shed some light???

Is this where the M5 meets the A38?

They were doing road works there for some time. If the talex didn't tell you they were there then I wouldn't worry too much. What were the other cars doing?

The average speed ones on the M5 right outside Exeter are now gone. However, they've just shoved some in at Cullompton, about 10 miles north of Exeter on the M5. I'm a little confused as I can only see one set of those yellow cameras on a pole, and I would have thought you need two to take an average over a distance?

Either way - make sure you're doing 70 through there. Theyy're really recent so chances are most sat-nav based detection devices are not aware of them. Looks like some roadworks may go up there soon, and the stretch will be down to 50. I advise keeping to that speed. ;)

Ah, thanks for the replies people.

I'm pretty sure the one time I crept up to 100 (:o) was overtaking before the first camera so hopefully I'll not be needing the services of pepipoo .

I did adhere to the 50 limit along the return stretch (pointless as it seemed), there were still plenty of other cars overtaking me on both directions though.

Makes me really think motorways are a waste of time these days - the safest place you could happily exceed 70 and all they're interested in is flipping camera revenue :finger:.

Bar stewards!

Still, at least I had more fun on the A38 when I gave up at J27 on the way back :D

you need 2 cameras min per lane, one for each lane at point a and one for each lane at point b. Have heard the type approval means going through the first set of cameras in lane one and then moving to lane 2 for the second gets you off the speeding tickets quiet nicely ;)

Is there any proof of this - it sounds like one of those urban myth loopholes that would have been closed quite quickly?

Chris

its in the type approval for spec speed measuring cameras on home office site, did see it about two years ago, if i get time later i will try and look it up.
