cambelt change on 1.9TDI

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I've just had the Superb serviced and the garage has reminded me that as it's an 03 plate one with 45k on the clock, it's advisable to do the cambelt.

Fair enough, done some research and it looks like I'm going to have to grin and bear paying for this as I don't want it to go bang.

The car's remapped so guess this is even more critical?

What I wondered was what else should I be changing if I'm getting them to do this? Bear in mind I'm on a strict budget (but obviously don't want a blown engine).

The garage mentioned a cambelt "kit" which I'd guess includes some other bits.

Water pump? Anything else?

Lastly, looks like this is a front-off job. Anyone got a guide price just to give me an idea on what I'd be looking at?

Cheers

Ric

Common advice is to get the waterpump done at the same time as the belt, although dealers may well be quite reluctant (apparently pump failure is far less common on the PD engines than it is on the 1.8Ts) The kit will include all the tensioners etc. that should be replaced at the same time as the belt. In terms of cost, I don't know if it's different for the Superb, but a full 60k service (including belt) set me back just shy of £600. I gather you can get it done at an indy for less than half that, but I had some warranty work I wanted to squeeze in before it expired!

FWIW I've found the genuine kit (belt, tensioner, relay roller, nut etc) for £77 inc VAT and postage, so supplying the parts can save you £50.

Most dealers are £400+ I think.

Waterpump and coolant change is advisable, about £40 all in for the parts.

Might be a good idea to change the a/c belt and the alternator belt too, about £20 for the pair.

I did the cambelt on my Passat (job is exactly the same on the Superb) for £130 including buying all the dealer tools

Its a good 4 hrs work I think. Shame you're so far away ;)

Waterpump and the other belts are the sensible options to change and like Tom_vRS, I did this job myself on the Superb with a mate and we managed to just loosen the front end so to speak and had enough access to do the job in hand.....

IIRC I paid around £65 inc VAT for my Cambelt kit from GSF.....

That won't be a genuine VW kit though Baker, although I'm not doubting it could be OEM quality, I'd want it to turn up in VW boxs for piece of mind. :)

Working in the 'Automotive Industry', and I have no idea if you do or not, but I am sure you know that although it may not be boxed as a VAG part it is made buy the same company in the same factory.....

I have no issues with buying from GSF as I know and work with many of their suppliers of which the company I work for is one of these said suppliers.....

Indeed, hence me not doubting that it is of OEM quality. However, I have been disapointed by the quality of some parts from GSF before.

On something like a cambelt, I'll be sticking with actual OEM. :)

Well at 136k and counting, like yourself, I am hopeful I won't have to find out how good a quality the kit was.....
