Domain Names and webhosting

Featured Replies

I'm after a bit of advice for my old man who wants to start up his business website.

Website will be purely for informational use (no online trolley) and I don't expect to host masses amount of data or require a large bandwidth.

It's been a few years since I looked into the subject, so and advice on suppliers and types of service appreciated

He currently has net access with bt adsl (bt openworld) so the cheapest option would be (I think!) to use his webspace for storing the website and just buy a domain name and redirect it.

Having said that, he would want a professional appearence and so if he were to buy "dadsdomain.com", he wouldn't really want IE to display in the bottom left "retrieving information from homepages.btopenworld.com/xavsdad" ;)

So, thoughts mucho welcomed :)

Also, I see there are companies that offer different types of hosting, i.e. Linux / IIS, etc. I can't see him delving into IIS or cgi scripts or the like, but if there's any kind of tutorial which explains all the jargon, please let me know

Domain fowarding would make most sense - if you do it through 1and1.co.uk it has good forwarding whereby it loads the pages within a frame, so the "location" still looks like what the user typed in.

Most people don't look in the bottom left hand corner anyway, so I wouldn't worry about it.

.co.uk's start at about

I use 123reg.co.uk and their forwarding works pretty well too.

I used 1 & 1 recently to setup my new site, and they seem pretty good, with plenty of online tech support (written in understandable language), free telephone tech support and reasonable pricing.

I have another project coming up, and I intend to use them again.

One thing I would say is buy the domain name where there are "real" people to give help and advise should you need it. Don't just go for the cheapest option.

For this reason I would steer clear of www.uk2.net - they only offer e-mail support - a real pain in the a$$.

I started using www.easily.co.uk - they have phone support and their domain names and hosting seem fairly priced.

Small world. 1&1 and 123reg are the two I'd been looking at with the most interest :D

I've (and still do) used UKReg and although they are cheap, support is non-existent. Not that I've needed it much so far...

My vote: UKREG as per Q. Then a Apache/php host. I can and will recommend www.xilo.net where briskoda was hosted. Ironcially the server we left was transformed in to a beautifully beast 4Gb of ram :D but I digress.

If you want any work or advice drop me an email, my rates are favourable to a pint of cask ale on site ;)

Be wary of domain registrars some are worse than cars salemen. Hence I've not had any problems with UKREG so have 15-20+ via them for friends and business friends.

Cheers Colin  A pint of cask ale will be made readily available, I might even add, in advance of the purchase of said services ;)

Just out of interest, how many GBs traffic is briskoda pulling per month?

Can recomend 1&1 - use them for my site - very easy set-up and a very easy on-line site builder, with plenty of choice for layout and colours etc.

Plus you can upgrade your site should on-line shopping be required at a later date.
