I know that Wikipedia is open to editing, however please see the following extract taken from a search on "Skoda Fabia VRS":

"Official figures state 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) takes 9.5 seconds, but several motoring magazines and websites have timed this to faster (around the 7.0-7.5 seconds) (Autocar: 7.1 seconds,[1] Auto Express: 8.1 seconds,[2] and FastHatchbacks.com: 8.5 seconds[3]). The in gear acceleration times are 50-70 mph in 5.6 seconds, quicker than BMW's 330i which needs 6.0 seconds. 20-40 mph in 2.4 seconds is as quick as the Lotus Elise 111R. Despite this the Fabia vRS can achieve better than 5.4 l/100 km (45 MPG US). If driven carefully, some drivers have experienced MPG rates of 68mpg+ over long periods.

The vRS was shown to be quicker than a similarly priced MINI Cooper around Top Gear's and Fifth Gear's test tracks."

What do you think about the Lotus claim?

Probably not the Lotus' sweet spot. Bear in mind my best 0-60 is 6.84 seconds - offically timed. I don't believe the 7.1 for a start and even the 8.1 is pushing the mark a bit. It doesn't mention the gears the tests are done in - In the fabia and the comparative cars - so there's no way anyone can comment really. :)

The fuel economy is fair enough but you need really fluffy padded slippers to get 68mpg.

There was a post on here a short while ago stating that Fabia vrs's modded to 220 BHP were pulling in 7seconds 0-60 (proven) so standard...think not!

Anyone who thinks a standard Fabia vRS weighing in at 1315kg with 104bhp per ton can do 0-60 in 7 seconds seriously has no clue about car physics.

How many times has this subject been done to death?

The words "dead","flog"and "horse" come to mind.

It should clarify on gears! 20-40 is probably great in 2nd gear in the VRS, while it could be too high in first and too low in 2nd on the lotus.... perhaps?

I agree the 0-60 figs are pretty optimistic. I remember reading the autocar one, it was a one off in freezing temps but I'm not sure how accurate it was as all their other runs were in the 8's!

I drive both a VRS (unmodified aprt from leather seats) and a standard 1.8 S1 Elise - I can assure you that the Lotus certainly feels quicker (partly cos you sit so low).

The Lotus is really defined by its handling rather than out and out speed anyway - the max speed of the VRS is certainly higher than the standard Elise S1. One of the great things about the standard Elise is that most of the fun can be had at reasonably leagal speeds.

But I am never disappointed with the briskness and drive in the Furby - we've had her for a year now, birthday yesterday, and in the 16k miles we have done I have always thought she is a great little car for the money.

Couple of things:

As already mentioned, the Elise claim is probably a case of using statisitics to tell whatever story you want to tell - remember the epoisode of Top Gear where they 'tested' a Mitsubishi Evo against an ordinary hatch, by pulling away in 2nd(?) - the normal car was WAY ahead, until the Evo reached the necessary revs for the turbo to kick in of course!

As far as mags like Autocar getting sub-8 for 0-60, I think it's pretty common knowledge that their car stopped off at a particular tuning company on its way from the docks...

Sorry.

Shall we edit it?

I think they were in a lot higher gear than 2nd YouTube - Lancer Evo-VIII MR(FQ400) VS. Fiat Stilo 1.6

Suitably reminded, it was something like top from a standing start - but you get my point!

With the Russian dubbing, I half expected Jackie Harris to shriek "I got the power!!!" ;):D

Showing my age there...

:sofahide:

It's to be my next car but will have to wait another 12-18months to scrape the pennies together first!
