Buying a Nintendo Wii in the USA

Featured Replies

I'm in the USA at the moment and am considering buying a Nintendo Wii (although not sure what the availability is like).

Are there any issues I should be aware of? Is it as simple as just changing over the power plug when I get it home, or will I need some kind of 240/110V transformer?

Are the games different for different regions?

Anything else I need to look out for?

Looking at the power pack for my Wii, it only handles 230v and is not a switchable 115/230 like most are now, so you will have that problem. Concerning the games, I don't know myself but surely a search on a Wii forum will tell you.

the games are region locked so i wouldn't bother tbh unless you have a good source lined up for games

They are region coded and you need a transformer.

Don't bother

possibly/probably not an issue these days, but there's also the NTSC/PAL thing

You can configure that in the Wii settings

cool :)

Also, the warranty would only cover it in the USA, not back here.

Don't bother.

I know someone who purchased a Jap Wii and they are having big problems when it comes to updates.

Also, Customs and Excise are ravenous this time of year because people are buying tons of stuff in the US due to the silly echange rate at the moment. You'd risk getting stung bringing a Wii back.

Besides, the basic Wii pack is about £175 at Amazon.de

If you want a cheap wii , then wate for them to come back in stock at Wilkinsons at £170

Nintendo Wii Console at Wilkinson Plus

Then use the code student07 to get 15% off the listed price.

Or , if your local argos has them in stock , buy £100 of gift vouchers and get another £10 free.

Repeat this and you now have £220 of vouchers to buy a Wii and accessories - effectively 10% disount

Thanks everyone for your help and advice.

I will be giving it a miss here.

I will try Wilkys, Argos or German Amazon when I get back.
