Alloy damage by tyre fitter!

Featured Replies

Just cleaned my VRS 2 weeks after having new rear tyres and have found damage to my alloy. A large bit of chipped off paint and a long scratch following the outline of the wheel. Has this ever happened to anyone? Do you think it's worth going back?

I wouldn't even bother going back - it's been too long.

You need to clean your wheels before you go and agree with the fitter(s) that the wheels are in mint condition before they start.

Easy to say after the event though.

Thought so- lucky my friend does wheel refurbs! Just wanted to know if this is a regular problem with Alloys.

I went back to ATS with damage and after some prevaricating, they agreed to pay for a refurb by Wicked Wheels. Worth a try - they can only say no..

Change of rears, this is interesting, just changed mine after 12 months and 12k miles, Dunlop SP Sport MAXX.

Tyres are currently at Dunlop and they say no problem, dealer and Skoda are so far saying otherwise..........interested to know why the rears changed on yours....my reason excessive tyre noise, initially thought wheel bearing but tyres wearing unevenly over entire face..........I think there are issues somewhere..

As for your rim damage, i would always say to fitter that alloys unmarked and get him to check with me first, but then as we all say hindsight is a wonderfull thing...

Changed mine at 20k. Very worn on the inside edges. Seems very soon for rear tyres. I have posted about that issue already.

Never had tyres changed on alloy wheels before. Didn't think to get the fitter to agree they were undamaged. Good advice, obviously will next time.

I had this problem when I went to have tyres fitted also. Luckily I decided to hang around to watch them doing the job only to see the plonker lay down my pristine wheel outer face down on their unpainted concrete floor.

I refused to let them refurb one wheel cause it would stand out so I nailed them for a new wheel, which I got in 3 days. (They kept the old one tho').As well as the other good advice you have had on this thread all I can recommend is that youlay time aside to watch what these fitters get up to with your pride and joy!!

reading this makes me wish I had steel wheels !

Had this problem about 18 months ago-my local Skoda dealer fitted 4 tyres..& managed to wreck 4 wheels(pegasus).

Fitter blamed the tyre machine!?!?!?..so,why didn't he stop after 1 tyre?!?!?!?.

Took at lot of time-but got set of wheels out of them.(Man from Skoda UK not happy, when was informed of dealer ****-up).

I'm about to have 2 new tyres fitted this thread is worrying me

I had the same problem at Costco recently. Their system is that you go into the sales centre, purchase the tyres, then you carry your tyres around to the fitting bays along with your receipt. The receipt has a section on it for comments on the car's condition to be written on. You are then told how long the fitting will be, in my case I was told 1 hour. I was aware that 1 wheelwas slightly scratched ( by a Costco fitter on a previous fitting! )

When I went to collect the car and checked the paperwork, someone had written on the receipt 'all alloys marked'. I had a check around the wheels and the 2 wheels that had tyres fitted were indeed now marked, 1 had a 1/2 inch gouge on the rim and the other had a 1 inch long scratch that looked like someone had put the wheel face down during fitting. The other 2 wheels were as before.

I tried arguing my case with the fitter and then the 'Tyre Centre Manager' but got nowhere as I 'hadn't had a fitter agree with me the condition of the wheels before fitting'

Lesson learned - I will buy my tyres from Costco in future but get my works mobile tyre fitter to fit them as I know he will do a good job! If anyone else gets their tyres from Costco - be warned!!

Hope this thread prevents others from making the same mistake by not agreeing with the fitter that all wheels were ok before he started

You should have argued it, if the marks were done there then the marks would have been CLEAN so could ONLY have been done there.

  • 4 weeks later...

I have just had 2 new tyres fitted to my vRS.

I got the fitter to check the condition and agree they were immaculate before fitting them.

Just got home and noticed 1 mark on each alloy - although one of them is me being really picky as it is about the size of a full stop mark, but because my alloys are anthracite it stands out (to me).

The other one is around 4mm and is on the outer edge of the rim - it looks like something has caught the paintwork and scratched it up a wee bit.

I am in two minds whether to complain as they are really small, and i'm sure with a tiny bit of touch up will be pretty much invisible to all bar me.

Just a bit pee'd off!

Yes complain basically because if you accept sloppy workmanship the company will think they can get away with it.

Do you have the condition in writing?

I bet these fitters take better care of their own wheels. Our local fitter seems good with alloys, although I was still nervous about having my new tyres fitted.

Chaps it can happen no matter what care you take....

All i will say is go on word of mouth from friends etc, we take great care to point out damage to wheels before fitting and you would be surprised the amount of customers who just dont care  We always use plastic rim protectors and plastic sleeves on the lever bars and all our machines have a plastic insert on the removal yoke:cool: as said though sometimes things happen, but if you have taken all the above steps then hopefully the customer will be more forgiving....;)

Have fun

Phil (I fit my own):P

We'll all come down to you then Phill. Maybe even get a members discount. LOL

Fair enough, but at least let us know it's happened.

You've got all my future business:thumbup:, I've yet to see a machine with all the protector in place that wasn't at the training centre, where are you?

(I fit my own):P

I bet you do:D

Seriously, it's good to see a technician proud of the work he does, good on you.
