I hope so. :)

Just doing a search to see what i can find on here.

Was going to suggest GMax/Jamex too.

Sorry to drag up an old thread !

But does anyone know what poundage/rate an uprated spring should be ?

I cant find any info.

Other than "harder than standard" you mean? It used to be usual to go up 10% on a standard ride height spring, so maybe 10% of standard rate plus standard rate times (standard free length/reduced free length) if you're dropping.

Yes, harder than standard, which i dont even know what the rate is either !

Depends on the weight of the car, generally suspension companies dont give out that info!

I think that h+r are the only company that do give out poundage info but its in kg/per inch!

Well if i could match anything with an H&R spring that would do.

Any ideas on the weight of a vRS ?

Cheers to F1btn; a mass applied per unit deflection figure (irrespective of units) is exactly what's wanted.

Now i'm totally lost !!

Mass appllied per unit deflection, aka spring rate. A measure of how far a spring moves when a given load is applied.

  • Author

Ah right. (i'm thick Ken)

So how can i work out the rate using this then ?

The rate is measured in (conventionally) pounds applied per inch deflection, or kilograms per 10mm. Unfortunately this is normally done with the spring free (uncompressed), so there isn't an easy way for a lay person to apply the sorts of loads, typically 100 to 200 lb per inch, required to a spring.

Anyone own a spring tester and based near Johnny?

The only thing is, i dont have a spring (apart from a broken ones) that can be for testing.

Not like we can work it out from wire diameter, length and number of coils, because the exact metallurgy and heat treatment of the steel used in making the wire are factors.

However, if you have 2 bits that butt together, using a spring tester on the big bit and the spring equation you could establish the original rate from the measured rate, the length of the big bit, and the overall length.

Ken,

Thanks for all your help it's much appreciated.

I'll do a dig about and see if there's anyone with a spring tester localish.

I think there's more to it that just measuring deflection. Those spring look like they're multiple rate jobbies, not constant pitch.

You know what car it's on and you can provide dimensions of the unloaded springs. From there it shouldn't be too difficult to obtain a reasonable approximation from any of the larger manufacturers.

Right !

Getting somewhere...

I spotted these on Ebay

G4 RACING SUSPENSION FOR SKODA OCTAVIA 2WD on eBay, also Suspension Components, Performance Tuning Parts, Car Tuning Styling, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 06-Feb-08 04:39:52 GMT)

Not that i'm going to buy them, but it mentions the front spring rate on their kit is 7.4kg/mm

So 7.4 (kg / mm) = 414.380868 pounds / in

That sound about right if i were to order my own springs ?

About 413lb/in; yeah that sounds like it's in the ballpark for what I'd expect.

Excellent.

Just need to go measure the diameter and free lenth and i'm all set.

Looking at roughly £15 per spring. :)

And number of turns in the coil; too many and you lose travel on full bump, which gets dicey as your wheel rate goes infinate.

  • Author

Ah ! Righto.

Noted that, thanks Ken.

Little update.

After getting sent the wrong springs before, i've finally managed to source 2 front springs for the coilovers from the states.

Was hard finding springs big enough, as they have an I.D of 70mm. Most coilovers are 1.9" or 2.5"

So, got them ordered today finally,

70mm I.D

9 Inch free lenth (matching amount of coils)

and the closest i could get on the rate was 400lbs.

All for £38 per spring.

Not too shabby afterall.

Just hope they're ok when they arrive. :)

Bet you will be please to get shot of that STD suspenson now wont you :)
