ignition coil vRS

Featured Replies

My O7 vRS let me down last week. Having just done a 3 hour run to London I stopped to fill up with petrol. When I set off again the EPC light came on and engine went into "limp" mode. Checked too see if had really put in petrol which I had so ended up calling Skoda Assistance. RAC turn up and once the laptop is plugged in he tells me that its the no1 coil gone. After getting a new one the car runs fine. He says its a common problem. Do I need to get a spare? Anyone any info?

Skoda recommend that all 4 are changed at the same time.

I've had 2 sets in mine!

Works out expensive mate.

I'm assuming you are refering to coil packs which do have a tendancy to be a bit troublesome from time to time but I'm not aware of the need to change them all because of one failure!! I know of one other on here (it does'nt appear to be as much of an issue with the MkII Octavia than it does with the MkI) who has had a coil pack failure which nearly resulted in a fire so it might be worth investing in a fire extinguisher!

I am now the proud owner of a dodgy coil pack on cyl 2 in my 06 RS... After been plagued with a list of problems this is the last straw.. My warrenty expired on the 14th of April. I have been informed by the garage that they will replace the offending coil pack as a good will gesture.. there are no coil packs available in Dublin so it's gone on back order.. Now the strange thing is no eengine management light came on. I had the car at a steady 80km in fourth gear and I just felt the car driving very jumpy but it is fine in idle mode... What do you guy's think? Have the garage got it wrong? Also, should insist on all 4 been replaced for the latest revision. I would appreciate your help on this.

I'd push for them to change all 4 (remember, I was told Skoda recommends).

All your coil packs have done the same amount of work, could be just a mater of time mate!

They may not have 4 to change, when I was having coil pack issues on my vRS it took an extensive search to find stock to get me back on the road.

I had 2 fail and one went off so badly it did cause a small flame in the engine bay, luckily I had no engine cover on as I was running an evoms.

Skoda may reccomend changing 4, but I could not get that done as there was a shortage of stock. The later coilpacks were more of a charcoal grey in colour rather than black and when a 3rd one failed it was another of the originals, not the new ones.

Not as widespread as a Mk1, but it is more common than you would like and I always carried a spare coilpack in the boot for the rest of my time with the octy (once I could get one ;))

Logic would suggest they get a sheet load in stock, the problem ain't going away, even after all this time.

@ Mcgyver - you've had a troublesome run with that motor, like myself. You'd really be hard pushed to continue with the brand after that.

Re-Coils, imho I think all should be changed, especially if they are the same rev. They obviously know there troublesome so theres definitely dodgy batches. IIRC all were changed on my Mk1 when they went. If they won't replace them all then find out for how long will the "goodwill gesture" be granted on the remain ones. At the end of the day you don't want to run the risk of being stuck somewhere in the car especially with the little one.

Another option might be to buy a spare one, maybe the guys might look after you with the price.
