Hi all,

Most of the high end cars have a blue tinge to their lights (which makes them stand out).

Are these:

A: Xeons

B: Blue light bulbs

C: Both

I'd like to get the same look

xenon headlights are an optional extra through skoda? is it the whole headlamp or can you get bulbs to go in the existing one to get the same brightness and effect?

Yea, I see awesomegti do the conversion kit... but they're £140 without VAT and p&p which is waaaaaay too much (for me).

I was thinking about the 4000k (?) colour bulbs for like £15! Or other cheap suggestions...

xenons last for about 80-100,000 miles. £15 bulbs last around 8-12k

Blue look (xenon effect) halogen bulbs are available from Car Bulbs from Power Bulbs - upgrade xenon car bulbs, headlight bulbs, autobulbs and autolamps from Philips, Osram and Narva. Philips X-Treme Power, Osram NightBreaker, Osram Silverstar and more. for not much money. Personally I'd go for uprated bulbs which improve the light output like the Philips Xtreme or Osram Nightbreakers

xenons are illegal in the standard fabia lights anyway

you can't exactly fit them though...

you can buy the complete light fittings and ballasts, and fit them along with the headlight washers and self levelling systems/sensors.

£19.99 Osram silverstars lasted me almost 50k miles in the MK I Octy.

I don't buy into the HID for life side of things although they do give out a lot of light.

Not sure, but theyre 50% brighter than standard, so hoping theyll be better.

Most of the +%age bulbs will give a much whiter light than standard (as I think that's how they achieve the better brightness.....)

Are they any good in the Mondy?

Where I am now gets very dark country roads, and lots of fog. Yet helpfully the firm by LX's - which dont have fogs!

Might have a bulb go down the weekend

Sorry for the slow reply (I completely missed your question ). The Mondeo has separate dipped and main beam bulbs so I have the Xtreme's as dipped and some naughty 100W bulbs for my main beam. The Xtremes are by far the best dipped beam bulb I've used and imho are better than dipped-beam xenons I've experienced.

In the game of numbers, they are only +80% brighter compared to the Osram Nightbreakers which are +90% so they may have been eclipsed already. I've not driven with them in dense fog, but they seem to cope with patchy fog fine and there's very little reflection.

just for reference, if a 'bulb' uses gas as the 'filament/medium' to produce light, and has a 'ballast' it IS a gas discharge/ HID/ xenon light.

Guys with the standard octavia lights (2001) what bulbs would I need?

Is there just one bulb for dipped/full beam? So if I get a set of these;

Narva Range Power Blue H4 from Power Bulbs

They will do normal night driving (dipped) and full beam?

I assumed they were halogen filled as they're filament lamps but I could be wrong. You'll want H7 fitment for the dipped and H1 for main beam, although I opted for some naughty 100W Philips Rallye for the main beam (you can't skimp on main beam, can yer? )

There are two types of 'xenon' bulbs:

The standard filament bulb which uses halogen gas with a dash of xenon, this gives the light produced a slightly whiter tint. 'HID look' is the nearest these bulbs can get with nowhere near the same light output.

Xenon HID lamps use a high voltage arc through xenon gas and vapourised metal salts to produce the white light associated with such systems. They are more or less the same as metal halide lighting systems.
