I saw Castrol GTX which seems like a decent brand.

Do you have the owners manual - It should tell you which specification you need.

From my 04 fabia manual (marked as 2003, so assume date of printing is 2003)shows oils for both petrol and diesel models.

Fixed service intervilles-

Multigrade high lubricity oils --petrol = VW500.00 OR VW502.00: DIESEL =VW505.01

Multigrade oils :Petrol & Diesel=VW505.01.

Think that as well there is information on a post regarding oils to use. There is it's

AND IT'S A STICKY

Also on skoda Auto - Homepage there is a contact for questions.

Thanks for the reply - That sticky is for a VRS - Mine is just a petrol

What oil would you recommend using?

I castrol any good?

Castrol GTX Magnatec 10W-40 for petrol engines.

Id say 10W 40, anything apart from cheap own makes, ie Halfrauds etc.

We sell Quantum stuff at work, over the counter, and have Shell on Bulk in the workshop.

The choice is yours as you are spending the £ at the end of the day!

If it was me id go for Millers if you can find somewhere that stocks it.

Hope that helps!

Or if you have a GSF place near you, check their price for 4 litre cans of Fuchs Titon "some thing suitable for your engine" - that is meant to be the oil that VAG use at the factory - I'm guessing that your engine is an 8 valve VW one AUD or earlier version.

My only issue with Castrol is that they "fix" the price so it does not represent good value - what I mean is that outlets are not allowed to set their price for Castrol oil - if they do then Castrol will stop supplying them. That is the reason why you either get something free with the oil or at other times nothing extra - but the same price.

Remember you can get synthetic Fuchs Titon for the price of semi-synthetic Castrol. Semi-synthetic oils do not get good press under many conditions - ie user expects synthetic performance but get mineral oil or less performance (especially SAABs).

The only shop I found VW505.01 was Halfrauds at an extortionate price. Then tried local VW dealer -pleasantly surprised at price .
