See a few post where poeple are mentioning the heater is slow to clear the windscreen, and to change to pollen filter. Where's the pollen filter and is it easy to change?

Is this for an Octy vRS or a Fabia???

If its a Octy vRS then its under the scuttle panel on the passengers side, you have to do it from the engine bay, and just make sure you locate it properly or water will flood in the passenger side footwell.

Its in the passengers footwell. Look up towards the underside of the dash, there are 2 plastic clips you slid together, pull the plastic panel down and the filter should come down with it. Hope this helps.

I forgot to say, you may get a face full of leaves !!!

And from experience, make a note of the orientation of the plastic filter bracket. The VAG filter and the bracket have arrows and "air flow" stamped on them, line these up. Silly me didn't notice these at first and had a heck of a job putting it all back together until I had a brief moment of clarity. Might save you a bit of frustration if you haven't done the job before, and I hadn't!

One reason for the pollen filter becoming a problem is if it gets very wet. The drains for the scuttle area below the windscreen are either side. If these block you can end up with the whole being full of water - when there is enough water it goes into the fan opening. The fan opening is protected by a curved plastic piece which is held by two screws. The n/s drain is easy to clean, but the o/s is difficult to reach as the wiper motor is in the way. If it won't clear with a bent piece of wire, you may have to take the wipers and plastic grill off (easy).

I spotted the carpet wet under the pollen filter and worked back to find the drains were blocked - with RICE! After a bit of thought we realised that the rice put out for birds on the bird table was being carried to the edge of the garage roof. When the birds dropped the grains they went into the scuttle slots. Once at the ends, they swelled up and held other rubbish to make a watertight seal. No RSPB Christmas cards this year.

might have been rodents, had some mice who got into the heater fan housing and made a nest in there a couple of years ago. couldnt figure out what the grindingnoise was till i opened it up to find a rodent nest (minus its residents) in it.

no probs, if you have had them in there then be prepared to disinfect the air ducting as their urine has a habit of getting around the air system and takes forever to remove.

Did a quick cleanup last week in the area, the drain holes were still open for business.

Changed the pollen filter with a new one, and most of the misting has gone now.

I don't think it had ever been changed before - so much for full service history eh

At what interval is the pollen filter renewed? I dont think mine has had one in the last 2 services , looking back at the invoices I havent been charged for one!

I think that it really depends on what dust levels the filter has experienced, if very dusty change it every year, if not very dusty change it every 2 years. I'm tight and the cars never see really dusty conditions so I change the pollen filters after 30,000 miles or 4 years - but I check and hoover every year or so! Remember that these filters have sticky stuff on them so hoovering them will not really restore full performance. Try replacing it with one of these "double" filter things that have a second filter section that uses carbon to trap smells - there is someone in UK that makes them and you can buy them online - but it gets a bit pricy due to P&P.

It looked like this after I bashed it to remove the feathers and leaves. Bearing in mind it started out white!!

I got three from the local motor factors (similar to the one shown above) - so you can guess I tend to change them regularly. In greater London every six months the white filter gets black, and I'd like to breathe less of this stuff if I can.

However, the non-OEM filters (same as Alfords etc) are not a patch on the original that I replaced. That one was stiffer, heavier and clearly better made.

So it may be worth considering an overpriced original in this case.

If you have the carbonised filter they don't start out white. The carbonised ones are there to reduce odours too and have a greyish tinge to them not far off that picture above. They're a little more pricey though than the standard one.

Even with a new filter though the screen can take a while to clear so don't expect miracles.

cleaning helped but now replaced mine with a new one £12,86 from Skoda dealer, doubt there is a schedual for replacing the filter though

My owner's manual states that it should be changed at the INSP service stages.

Haynes forgets to mention it completely as a service step.

Go figure.

You need to look up under the glove box. There are 2 plastic clips that slid together. Push these together and the panel should pull down with the filter. Hope this helps:)
