Pocket PC - Software

Featured Replies

OK - I have a pocket PC (Toshiba E310) - got it ages ago, but not used it for much else than synch'ing with my work outlook.

Am considering upping the SD card to 256/512mb and using it as a portable MP3 player. But got me wondering what else to do with it - so what do other PPC owners rate as essential software?

Remember that the E310 has no bluetooth or WIFI access... (Has net access when docked, however)... Any suggestions?

Steve,

I use my Pocket PC mainly for sat-nav in the car, so i have TomTom Navigator & Trafcam (GPS SpeedCam locator) Installed.

I also have a very handy English-Czech-English dictionary ;)

Geoff , where did you get the GPS speedcam software?

Im thinking of getting some sort of laser/radar thingy but it would be easier to combine it with my pocket PC/ Sat nav.

Steve, Trafcam is subscription based. Go to www.trafcam.com

There are free alternatives out there too, but i prefer trafcam as it's updated regularly :)

Got a new palm T3 today... :)

Will see if the pocket PC can be put to use elsewhere, else will flog it...

And I got a new Ipaq 2210 Pocket PC today.

  • Author

Will have to wait a bit before going for TomTom though, I think...

First impression of the T3 - what a screen...! Software's pretty nifty as well :) Was going to go for the Zire Z72, but read some bad reviews on it's MP3 playback...

(Didn't want another PPC - didn't get on with the one I had)

Got the 2210 on bank hol monday, impressed or what. Now running tomtom v3 bluetooth without any issues after I upgraded the ipaq from from hp's website.

Steve, you could have got the T3 with tomtom from pcworld I think it was around 580.

True Manny, but:

a) This breaks the purchase into 2 parts :)

B) Can buy them online separately for less than 580... (wired GPS rather than bluetooth version, especially)

Plus am hoping they'll update the palm version to allow adding of POIs!

Geoff -

Still having problems with my pocket PC, everytime I return home the Tom Tom has dropped out, software map still on CF card, but start up is nowhere to be found - am I doing something wrong (Oh by the way, SD card still not working) should I send this back to HP for repair, or is it operator error?

Gaz, The only thing I can think of is the ppc is losing charge and reseting back to factory defaults. Are you using it in spain.

Hey Mannyo

Yeah using it in Spain, it does the Biz once you figure out which area you are in, it will not for example direct you all the way from Santander to Los Alcazares, you have to change area map half way down Spain.

So you reckon that draining the battery resets the unit to factory default, It is very annoying to keep synchronizing everytime I go home. Thanks for the info though.......

Hi Gaz.

Regarding switching maps, can't you store the whole of Spain as a single map? In the UK version of tomtom, you can have Northern England (and Scotland) and Southern England or whole of England. If you have North + South (which is the same as whole of England), I think you still have to switch map databases. If your CF card has enough storage for the whole of Spain, maybe a "whole of Spain" will sort out the map switching stuff.

start up is nowhere to be found

Have you lost your start up menu completely or just the tomtom shortcut? Maybe a soft reset would sort it out?

Steve, sorry for the thread hijack :o

Steve

Thanks for the input - I have one CF chip with the whole of the UK on, and no problem, but when downloading the Spanish map it segments(CF card is 256mb), and you have to select area, unless you know something that I dont, as for the startup, it is only the Tom Tom that drops out of the menu, Oh and all of my contacts, get the contacts back when Sync'd with lap top but no start up for Tom Tom - Strange, or is it me.......... :(

Gaz,

I sometimes get the program in the start menu going "funny" - they lose all their colour definition and revert to the standard pocket pc icon of a white oblong with a blue bar on top. If this happens, i can still run the programs from the icon. What you seem to be saying is the link disappears altogether and the only way that has happened is if I have let the power run right down and the pocket pc has returned to factory defaults. That is definitely the worst thing about PPC's - they can not be left indefinitely without being recharged :(

Cheers

Yeah Mark

The more I hear about the pocket PC the more I distrust them for storing information, as I said, the last time I turned it on I had been away for 5 weeks and all of my contacts were gone, just as well I had backed up prior to my departure, the only ball breaker is the Tom Tom, I have to reinstall every trip home, but I must say when it is working it does the biz, been to places in Spain that I did not even know exsisted, ( and I was only trying to get to Barcelona)

Gaz, they are ok for storing files. Just store them on your removable media card, these survive the flat battery problem.

I suppose the only thing to do is have them sat in their cradle when not in use or backup TomTom to the CF card (is that possible) so that it can be reinstalled really quickly.

Cheers

Manny - Mark,

Yeah now that I have settled down in an area I like, I can set it up to be on charge all of the time, but the last 8 months have been a nightmare with moving all the time, and living out of a bag. Now I need to settle down to a routine, get everything up and running properly and start with the car mods, That nice man down at the Tax office has just returned all my money to me.......

Gaz,

Now you're just being cruel - talking about getting tax back - can we get a moderator in here please?? ;)

Steve? I must be having an identity crisis :D:rolleyes:

If you go to the File Explorer, Windows -> Startmenu, is TomTom listed there? If not, you should be able to create a shortcut from the tomtom executable and then move the shortcut into the start menu directory.

Are you running PPC2002 or Windows Mobile 2003 ? On my Dell axim x5 (WM2003), Tomtom is actually integrated into the desktop wallpaper, appearing below the calendar / email summary (kind of like the Outlook Today screen you get in MS Outlook). It doesn't appear in the start menu at all.

Hmmm! thought your name was Steve :o So will start again.

Dear Mister NoName will try as you have suggested, and I am running Windows Mobile 2003. Still learning the functions of the PDA, over the last eight months my life has been in turmoil, but starting to settle down now, even looking to travel back to the UK, just so I can have a major burn up on the Spanish motorways :D keep smiling
