Omg my tyre ripped off on the m/way!!

Featured Replies

Today has been one of the worst days ever! first of all my mum's alarm didn't go off and she was supposed to be getting me up in time to get to work for 7, I didn't get there til ten to 8. Then I went to do a photoshoot at the Tower Ballroom when my mum rings saying she's lost my spare car keys and I have to leg it half a mile to where my car is parked to move it before I get a ticket, drive her to college then walk all they way back to the tower from college! luckily she found them as I was halfway there, they had fallen out of her bag!

THEN I went to the malthouse.......after managing to drive past the turn off, realising just as I passed it, I came off at junction 24 and spent a good half hour on the phone to Mr Grumpy and driving round in circles trying to find the damn place from country roads! (Graham, Kelly says you are grumpy! and that was before I told her your screen name! pmsl!)

After the malthouse meet me and kelly went to meet up with some guys off the 306 owners forum in another pub. We had a nice time in there and then headed back for the m/way. We got on the M62 at J24 and about 5 mins later I hear an awful noise and think 'sh!t, it must be a tyre'. Pulled onto hard shoulder and my entire tyre had ripped clean off the rim through the wall.

Then a problem I had been pondering a few weeks back dawned on me....how do I get my spare tyre out when I have a sub wired into my boot? And no screwdriver........ oh dear.

Spent f*cking ages on phone to skoda/RAC to get help, ended up giving phone to kelly to wait while I tried to remove my sub from the boot using kelly's tweezers. Eventually I suceeded after she had got through to them and roughly told them where we were.

So, there's me, stood on the side of them M62 - the people at the meet will know what I was wearing  Kel kept telling me to put a coat on but I couldn't really feel it, just couldn't feel my fingers!!

Worked out how to get the plastic black caps off the wheel nuts with the random tweezer things you get in the tool kit, had to ring my mum, who had the handbook, to find out how to get my locking wheel nut off and eventually managed to change the wheel before the RAC even got there and a police car pulled up just as I was letting the car down off the jack. Finally set off again at 1am, frozen through.

I feel a little traumatised tbh, even though kelly said she was surprised and impressed how well I handled it and said she would have cried lol.

Here's the tyre sat in my boot....

:(

I know, could have been worse I guess. But it just seemed everything was against me! Was funny though, just as we were about to leave Kelly said to the copper - "how many girls do you know that can do that?!" lol!

Oh, and I've just realised I lost one of my new earrings in the process :(

Awww, poor Lozzykins :(

Hope you will be able to get everything sorted ok, and the sub back in with proper tools.

How on earth did that happen to the tyre?

Glad you're ok...what were you wearing though?

what were you wearing though?

lol, well...;)

haha, no really - I was wearing a skirt and fairly thin top! Was an icy wind blowing but I couldn't feel it, mild panic, adrenaline and determination sort of take over.

I am aching all in my neck and arms from the force to remove the wheel nuts!!

Looks like you'd been driving on that flat for a while, it is very difficult to tell you have a puncture/flat tyre sometimes on low profile tyres, especially on motorways.

Thats why it's imperitive to check tyre pressures more often on modern cars!

Well done Loz ....not many people can or will change a wheel these days (male or female) glad you are OK and hopefully that is your bad day out of the way for a while.

Oh no. That could have been worse. Glad your ok. And well done for changing the wheel. Think you should be called Loz McGuyver after your skill with a pair of tweezers.

Glad your ok though.

I think you fared pretty well given the circumstances.

At least you actually knew what you were doing... a lot of people don't even know how to change a tyre which is scary.

Maybe you should think of getting some tools in your car i.e. screw driver?! lol

So... lessons learned: Never... err i mean ALWAYS check your tyres! (although could have been a defective tyre... but to me looks like quite a lot of wear on the edges of the tyre to me).

Looks like you'd been driving on that flat for a while,!

My thought exactly

it is very difficult to tell you have a puncture/flat tyre sometimes on low profile tyres, especially on motorways.!

i disagree there though, a car handles quite differently with a flat tyre, even on a motorway, it doesn't help if the radio is turned up loud mind, as then you cant hear when something goes wrong.

Thats why it's imperitive to check tyre pressures more often on modern cars!

The main reason a lot of mechanics don't like long life services, is because a lot of owners don't check over their cars between services.

A friend who had a tyre down to the wire (no tread left at all) said "it must of just happened".

These things don't 'just happen' they take a while to wear out, but with the reliability of cars nowadays they go mainly unchecked.

Glad you're ok, Loz - outcome could have been a lot worse  I've also put a torch in the car (along with a few tools) because I know that when I need to change a wheel it's bound to be the middle on the night on an unlit bit of road

In fairness My tyres and everything else on my car DOES get checked regularly and my car is well maintained. It can't have been flat long because all I noticed was a few mins before it sounded loud going over cat's eyes, but before I had time to think about that it had come off. Even when it came off it wasn't THAT bad handling wise as it was a rear tyre, felt a bit odd, but not uncontrollable. We had stereo on so on the tarmac it didn't sound any different until it was off, the only indication before that was the cats eyes sounding a bit loud. Prior to all this we had been down twisty lanes and roundabouts with no change to the sound or the handling. I'm not a complete moron, I know how my car handles. If I'd had a flat front I would prob have noticed sooner as I'd have lost steering.

 OMG Loz , glad you and Kelly are ok , that could have been really nasty :grouphug:

Thanks :)

You will look back and laugh one day loz.

Least you learnt that you don't need a screw driver to get to the wheel now :D

Like its been said before most people don't have a clue when it comes to changing a wheel now and you safe

I think I'm still a bit traumatised, I can't concentrate at work at all! I got very little sleep last night asI got back pretty late and I have grazes all over my hand from catching it on the wheel. My neck is absolute agony too :(

get some ibuprofen and plenty of tea to keep you going and then an early night should see you right

Oh Loz, what a pavlova...

Must have been quite an experience... Still, just glad you're ok

Don't have any Ibuprofen with me and I don't like tea  also, it's my works xmas doo tonight :( *sigh*

That looks a mess - glad you are OK.

What will you be wearing tonight? :P

Alcomihol my dooo the trick? But you'll probably feel uber crap in the morning... unless you get something to numb the pain in the morning? lol

If it had been your front tyre... it wouldn't have been good... Hope you'll have gotten over the trauma by the 21st?!

That looks a mess - glad you are OK.

What will you be wearing tonight? :P

How about something warm... just in case.... hehehe

and I have grazes all over my hand from catching it on the wheel. :(

i hope you've got no ladders in your tights or damaged your "bluetooth" skirt ;)

pmsl @ the bluetooth skirt!

I'm just wearing jeans tongiht so bit warmer, but I'm not driving thank god, and I've told mum to pick me up in my dad's car, I want to leave mine in the garage for a bit, I'm scared somethings going to happen to it!

Even my legs are aching now, I feel like I was actually run over by one of those trucks that went flying past me last night
