Fabia wiper blades; TDI mpg; engine stutter

Featured Replies

Every Fabia I have driven has had juddery wipers. On my last Fabia I fitted Valeo Silencio ones and they were much better, although after a few months the passerger wiper juddered intermittently. I recently got another Fabia, complete with juddery wipers, and I wonder what in people's experience are the best wipers to fit to cure this.

My new fabia is a "55" TDI and it seems to averaging about 50-52mpg which is poorer than I thought since in similar driving my old SDI returned well over 60mpg. Is this typical for a TDI 100?

By the way the "stutter" at 1800 rpm seems to have gone away, except occasionally when cold. Is it still worth changing the EGR valve gasket anyway?

Just keep the screen clean :)

You're getting more than my vRS!

Don't get me started on this "stutter".... lol

I've just got a pair of those floppity ones for my Fabia, and they seem much better than the oem ones.

Make sure the screen is really clean.

Give it a clean with something like halfords or autoglym intensive glass cleaners and then after this a wipe with some vinegar. Also give the blades a wipe over with vinegar.

Usually juddering is a sign that there is cr*p on the screen/blades or they are worn out.

You can get some kind of coating for your windscreen which is meant to make the wipers go over it much smoother, can't you? It also makes the water collected on the screen more transparent?

Maybe I just dreamt it... :D

Aquapel ( water repellant stuff, courtesy of Devonutopia ) does the trick:thumbup:

It does, although doesn't last as long as I'd hoped (3 months before you notice blade marks) although that is with fairly high mileage.

The other thing is that a screen has to be exceptionally clean for the aqualpel to bond properly to the glass.

PIAA wipers and no juddering.

Bosch Aero wipers (the floppy ones) for me. Tried some cheap floppies off eBay first but the mountings were woeful and they juddered awfully. The Bosch have been brilliant.

Most of these screen treatments are just Isopropyl Alcohol which can be bought at any chemist for pence. In the print trade we have 100 litre drums of it all over the place. Once it's on you don't need wipers above 50mph, the water just streams off.

My vRS is averaging 50 when I drive it, but when I'm instructing it goes down to 30-ish.

I got 678.8 miles out of a tank in my Vrs last week at 57 mpg love it

These are the dog danglies. They will literally wipe the floor with any other kind of wipers ;)

You will never need Aquapel or anything like it and the last a very long time.

Applied some Ombrelllo screen coating to mine and the wipers didn't judder (not that they juddered before!) Just keep the surfaces clean and they should glide over the glass :D

When I had my Focus, Ford used to sell a solution for the windscreen that was very effective in the rain......I mean I put it on my screen and you didn't need the wipers in the rain, the water just flew off....can't remember what it was called????

No need for wipers at all!!!!

I'll try to find out what it was called...

It may have been a Fords own thing but I'm sure it was something like the autoglym products.

The only time either my wife or I have had juddery wipers was when I (foolishly) put Halfords own-brand ones on mine, so didn't have the curve on the passenger side blade. Lesson learned, we've been OK on OEM-equivalent Bosch ones, although on both our cars the passenger side one is a bit smeary at speed - maybe it could do with a spoiler...?

Hmm. Didn't know you could get better wipers than the 'standard' Bosch ones. I'm due for some new ones soon so will try. Can you get a back one to match? I thought you had to use the standard Skoda part (I have purchased two during my tenure as a Fabia owner).

As for economy, 55 mpg average on the motorway at about 80 (kph of course). It will do nearer 60 mpg if I don't have to queue in traffic. I try to save some fuel these days.

I've just put Bosch Aerotwin wipers on my Fabia (you need to get the retrofit ones - part number AR533S) and they are great, much better than the standard Bosch wipers. The screen additive you mention I think is called Rain-X although there is a Halfords own brand version. Just rub it onto a clean screen and the rain beads off very rapidly in the wind so that you barely need to use wipers at motorway speeds. What is disappointing is that the rear wiper is a main dealer job only and after just having had mine done, it is still a bit smeary. It'd be nice to be able to do it yourself and choose which make to go for.

Another tip about wipers and windscreens - never get any wax or wax-like substances on them. If you wash your car with any product that has a automatic wax in it, that is horrid for creating wiper judder. (If you clean with that type of product, then clean your windows properly after - ammonia or water and newsprint or w.h.y.).

Try taking it off (it just pulls out), flipping it 180deg (so the end that was nearest the motor is now nearest the end of the arm) and putting it back on. I gather there's a slight 'lean' on the blade to take account of the park position, however there's no way of telling which is the correct way to fit it!

Bought a rear blade for my Grandad and we fitted it a couple of days ago. Actually it has 'top' printed on one end of it.

Agree 100% with Mossman - HUGE improvement; no judder, noise, smearing or lifting. Long may it continue.

One comment. Passenger side blade misses a tiny area towards the end of its anti-clockwise stroke due to fall-off in windscreen curvature at that point. Hardly worth the mention though.

Got mine from same source, incidentally.

Shame my Skoda dealer can't read then. I switched the rear wiper blade over myself and it is infinitely better now.

I must say that the Bosch Aero ones I fitted today are a HUGE improvement over the standard ones - WIPERBLADES.CO.UK : The UK's Premier Online Store provided them, excellent service too

I got my front Aerotwin wipers from the same website and was also happy with the price/service. It is the only place I've found in the UK so far that has the right part number.
