Tuning recommendations for RS

Featured Replies

Going to pay a visit to Westfield Engineering in Co. Meath (Ireland) next week. They seem to have a good reputation and do Revo Technik remaps

which has been recommended to me over the Upsolute route.

Costs 499 sterling, and while they have not done an RS before, they say any Golf GTi 180's they have done easily hit 210bhp and 240lbs torque. Is this power increase realistic ? They do a rolling road but not recommended

for a couple of days until the remap beds in. Still, if I got the dyno done

straight after would it be worthwhile ?

Also recommended is an uprated dump valve, as they said the stock one may leak over time ? Is this accurate. Any advantage to a better

dump valve.

A K&N induction kit is also a plus they say, and wont cause any MAF problems as it is not oily. What does this induction kit get me besides noise ?

Finally they say it might be a good idea to get the downpipe changed on the exhaust system. They are checking into that to see what options are available on the RS. Any ideas ? Is this worthwhile ?

My RS is a Sept 02 model by the way.

thx

Standard DV are prone to fail regardless of map...what one do they suggest?

Downpipe.....no point changing it unless you're change the cat back as well. Milltek do a dp with a sports cat. Will give you a lot more torque. Wothwhile yes but with the cat back as well.

Hi

I would go REVO over upsolute, but then I know little of upsolute which might be mis-leading, but we know REVO (yes and the others) work.

Re power claims, yes very possible take a demo and see if you llike it (push for a full ecu copy/restore after the 5hr elapsing).

Results of remap will be noticed immediatly, the reson for delaying the RR session is relating to the ECU. It essentially needs to relearn/tweak it'self for your driving style, fuel octane and other factors. Basically not alot of difference, if they will do one for you before and after in the price (see no reason not to) then that covers the base of a before and after. (Do not get hung up on the figures (hence the before image)) The Rollers should produce around 180BHP uness very hot or poor cooling. So you should see 210 ish or less or more depending on how good or bad your engine is....it won't matter as soon as you find a nice N road, you'll be happy ;)

DV yes if yours is leaking, if you are anyway technical with a screwdriver and bandaid's then it's a DIY job . If willing again I would push them to fit

KN are oiled, unless they just changed or added a new filter?

AFAIK most are oiled barring green filters. But I have a K&N cone very very lighlty oiled and 2ft of pipe to get up so I'm not worried TBH.

Downpipe makes a huge dfference if it's got somewhere to go, not sure how good the std back box is, never had one. Miltek do one that fits no problems at all now.

The other option btw ;)

Stenna are doing 20 pound return trips for car + people at present.

So the other options are now options again + a bit of fuel at the port while it's still cheapish.

Hope that helps.

If you do opt for Revo, you can add the other mods at a later date since you will be getting a generic rather than tailored remap. SWMBO wouldn't have agreed my remap if Jabba had suggested that lot to go with it! :(

PS It would be interesting to see before and after dyno plots for the standard Revo remap since I don't believe any have been posted here as yet.

PPS I assume that you have been quoted for the basic Revo remap without the extras which bump up the price significantly, but do give you more to play with - and more power if you opt for SPS 3.

Milltek dp will be 2.5'' in bore so won't fit standard cat back unless you fit a reducer.

Doesn't seem much point in freeing up flow at the dp only then to reduce it again going into standard cat back.

Forgot to mention you can get a sports dp/cat from Supersprint as well.

Add an SPS3 and you can adjust it for timing and boost. I can't recall finding much beyond 95 Octane or the black stuff in Ireland so timing scope will be reduced anyway.

The generic map is also developed over time, there really is no "real" difference anymore IMHO. Both (generic & custom) offer a good boost of power within ranges, although not all off the shelfs are suitable, ala superchips which is quite frankly a waste of sand. The new generation of adjustable generic maps (APR/REVO) makes then tweakable...now to get a btton like schuuy to adjust power for straigts and corners....I knew this touch screen would be usefull :D

Forgot to say; don't forget insurance as I know it's not a good situation out there at present.

Denis,

Not many zaust bits for the 4x4 :( One more reason I left her behind, of course I still miss that 3k drop the clutch in the rain at junctions ability though.

@SkodiRS,

Yup thats what I said :D

if it's got somewhere to go....okay not waterford crystal clear, but when am I ever clear in what I post....ho hum shuts the cupboard door again.

it does fit the std system.

it does fit the std system.

2.5'' dp/cat fits fits the standard cat back with any kind of reducer in between?

Just interested.

dunno but cols powerflow which met his std DP system meets my milltek w/o any messing...
