N95 Satnav

Featured Replies

Well, ive taken the plunge and done it...

Ive just paid for a 3-year subscription for Western europe navigation on nokia maps for £72 quid... BARGAIN! - even tho i prob wont have the phone 3 years, i figured that its worth it for the extra 8quid over one year... and western europe is only about a tenner more than just the UK... now that ive had a chance to use the latest maps app, its just as good as tomtom.. not as simple to just pick up and use.. but once youve used it a few times its fine...

for the convenience and the price its definately worth it.

for anyone thinking about satnav on the N95.. make sure you have the latest firmware, nokia maps and maploader, A-GPS enabled and then get a 30 day licence for a fiver... cant argue with that at all. :)

now i can get rid of the 1.5gb of TomTom maps hogging my memory card :D

You'll have to talk me through what I need to do to make mine work hehe! I definately need it :(

I had a play with the maps while I was away over the weekend and it does seem quite nifty. I'll be signing up as soon as I've got a memory card and downloaded enough maps.

Don't forget there's a free 3-day trial. Unfortunately I wasn't organised enough to use it this weekend.

I'm on the last day of my 3 day trial on my new N95

I've been using it on my regular travels just to evalute it.

And I can safely say it's awesome considering its on your phone:thumbup::thumbup:

Fao Col: got anymore N95 goodies for us geeks to play with (light sabre for v20 maybe ):)

Just to confirm Col - is this only using the in-built GPS receiver for navigation? If so I'm interested as well. I'll still use TomTom in-car, but for out and about, city breaks for example - it would be invaluable.

Cheers,

Steve

yes, but it also will work with an external blutooth GPS module if theres one paired with it..

if your going to use it for city breaks maybe you dont need the navigation?? IIRC you can still plan routes without the nav licence

Quake and Duke Nukem 3d :D

oh and S60ticker

Has anyone else found that it takes you on really weird routes? Does this improve if you pay for the navigation option? I live in Peterborough and go to Boston quite a lot. If I ask it to take me on the fastest route it takes me through Spalding town centre and then round the houses through Boston to get out the other side, which is not going to be the fastest unless all the major roads round Spalding and through Boston have traffic jams, and if I select the Shortest Route option, it takes me my normal way, but for some reason takes me in completely the opposite direction on the dual carriageway only to turn me round and send me back on myself at the next roundabout! Very weird!

Just out of interest, what version software is everyone using? I've got an N95 8gb with V 11.0.026 firmware and maps version v1.2. Are these the most up to date? Everyones been going on about v20... is that only for normal N95's?

I used a friends N95 navigation recently and although the maps etc were accurate... the GPS signal seemed to let it down a fair bit.

Took quite a while to get a GPS fix and then kept loosing the signal in areas where my phone has no problem....

I think they should have put an external antenna socket on the phone that would have helped!

Personally i find TomTom works best... but from what i understand TomTom can't utilise the internal GPS of the N95??!

P.s.

Has anyone else found that it takes you on really weird routes?

Yes we did find this... instead of taking us round down the dual carriageway in manchester and going east... it took us all the way round manchester heading west just to go south then come back to the west side again!!!

No, currently the latest ver of tomtom does not work with the N95 internal GPS.

the latest firmware with A-GPS enabled is much better for getting a lock.. i can usually get a lock within 20seconds... even when inside.

Ah yeh... guessing thats assisted GPS?

Don't think he had it enabled as he gets charged for data use.

I think route-66 works with the N95 internal GPS.

i used my N95 while on holiday in spain and we had a hire car all week and its about 99.9% faultless

worked excellently, what i love is the fact i walk around and all day everyday in my pocket i have my phone, camera, mp3 player, internet access and now a sat nav

its not the N95 thats slow for getting a location its the nokia maps software as i have been playing with the latest google maps recently and that gets a lock much faster.

That figures. I've noticed a few times the map location has taken ages to update even though it claimed a satellite lock.

Google maps??? For N95???

Yes just go to google on your phone and there should be a link at the top to download google maps.

Ive got it on my windows mobile phone.

It now supports GPS location and you can view the satelite images available in google earth/maps.

Shame you can't download all the info and install it... must use up a fair old chunk of internet allowance!

Thats why i pay my £7.50 for unlimited* internetz

the latest google maps gets a general fix first based on your Cell location.. then narrows it down as it gets more sat-locks... most ive had was 11.

Maps is just as fast to get a sat lock, just wont give you an accurate location until its got 5 sattelites.

I also pay for unlimited web'n'walk and its well worth it.

Use it everyday! And you just don't have to even think about going on the internet and how much its going to cost!

It only costs me £6.38 for it too... so only paying £12.50 a month in total!!!

One feature my phone has is a program called QuickGPS which connects to the internet and downloads all the info on the satelites before hand which takes the lock-on time down to around 10-20 secs!!!

thats what the Assisted GPS feature is on the N95.. the high end tomtoms have a similar feature too.

Tried another experiment with Nokia maps today. Set in a route I travel quite a bit, asked it for the shortest route... took me a random way and said it would be 47 miles. I then asked it for the fastest route, which was the way I'd usually go, and it was 44 miles... what's going on there?!
