Automatic transmission - Skoda Superb

Featured Replies

I know the Superb can be had as a 2.8 V6 petrol and a 2.5V6 diesel with an auto. Any other combinations?

I'd be interested to hear any ownership experiences of diesel autos.

Theres the pd130 and pd100 diesels. The pd130 is also available with tiptronic auto as well.

Thanks, Andy.

The pd130 tiptronic sounds interesting but the pd100 seems a bit puny for that size of car.

Yep..dont even bother with the pd100.

pd130 is a good all-rounder with ample shove.

At launch, only the 2.8V6 30v 198bhp Petrol and 2.5V6 160bhp (I think) Diesel were offered with a Semi-Auto, but i didn't know about the PD's, but a new 1.8T semi has just been released, but I beg you dont get any of them, please, all reviews critiscise them and some quote that it makes even the 2.8 Feel sluggish and needs to be throttled frequently. If you want proof of how bad these Auto's are then take a look at skodas website and see the difference between the 1.4 16v Auto and Manual Fabia, take a peek.

Autos generally are more sluggish than the manual equivalents though...torque converters are pretty inefficient! You just need to decide how important effortless driving is to you...

Very true.......

Whenever I get back into a manual car, it takes me a few minutes to adapt back, then I enjoy shifting up and down, and having engine braking. Then I hit the first traffic jam, and I suddenly want my auto box back!

Know what you mean...having to remember to keep changing down at lights and that... :D

Mind you, my auto also has tiptronic and engine braking!

But you do get engine braking (OK, not as much as on a manual box) - you just have to move the selector past "D" and into the numbered slots ;)

..and is the only auto I have ever driven to show "0" in the selector display, thus indicating it's not in any gear and hence not going anywhere!

Much like every other auto, you need the brake pedal down before you put it in "D" or "R"... :P

Unlike most other autos though, it has a proper clutch!

(psst, that was in D!!)

Well, yes, you do. But I rarely bother faffing, unless I'm on a long hill or something -and the car will change down by itself, under some circumstances. I think they have some kind of engine-at-idle-but-still-accelarating sensor. I never see the point of having an auto, then shifting yourself. Unless the brakes are liable to take a pounding.

Phil

On my Auto the Lock up Clutch causes engine braking in 3rd and 4th though it will do it manually if you select the low range settings, thats where it seems an automatics whine comes from, The computer wont let it change down until it's passed the Red line, so If you do 70mph on the motorway and youre about to turn off at the junction, slam it in 1st and watch how quickly u stop as it Brakes down through the gears with a sickening whine. But will it engine brake in an emergency stop?, Tho admittedley driving My Freinds CVT micra was fun, If u floor it at 0mph and take ur foot of the accelerator, it carries on accelerating at idle enine speed!, it seems though my Sons 82' Pontiac Trans-AM can only Say in gear and cant idle whilst moving, but If you will drive that kind of car, the fuel economy isnt an issue!

I thought all the VW auto boxes were adaptive to your driving style, I know the auto box in my Transporter is and also very smooth. It also has electronics to disengage drive when held on the foot brake say at lights so as to burn less fuel and not be so forcefull all the time as a Merc Vito was I ran for a short while. However, the down side is the roll back you get (if on a hill)as the drive re-engages, but with a slight lag

As for reviews...do you believe all reviews?
