At 80k, I wouldn't bother going to a main dealer. IIRC, the 80k is a 20k major with air filter and possibly brake fluid change (depending on when it was last done). Will be interesting to see what they're quoting for as they may be including the cambelt change....

I'd be very interested in your service post mortem as I'm in a similar position myself soon and debating about doing it myself (fortunately for me i've got a chain rather than a belt)?

although the car is starting to make alot of wierd noises all of a sudden - and things are starting to pack up - got to renew steering sensor, coolant continually needs topping up and an almighty groaning noise as i pulled off yesterday - thought something had dropped off!

Buy the bits and do it yourself. Far cheaper.

Failing that, take it and the bits to an independant and get them to stamp the book if that's what you're worried about. That's what I do.....sod the dealer.

I agree - not overly fussed about the book - although our local dealer - irvines - seems very highly thought of. dumb question - but would the service for a VRs and mine 1.4 comfort cost the same???

I paid around 30 quid inc the brake fluid and inc VAT for a brake fluid change on the Fabia so I'd shop around for prices on that. Pollen filter is not the same as the main air filter. Also not sure what Getr DSG oil is for? Oh, and I'd also not bother with the screen wash.

Worth ringing around and seeing if anywhere else will do the service cheaper.

Those numbers don't add up, worked out to be £373 :confused: - you'll have to ditch this VAG stuff for something reliable

I sold mine just before the 80k service, I needed....

1) brake fluid

2) cam belt

3) rear discs and pads

4) major sercice and not just 'oil change'

the money I saved on the 80k service, paid for my new car for three months! :eek:

What sort of oil are they putting in? certainly 'NOT' PD oil, thats for sure.

Thats a expensive bill mate, how old is your fabia?

I'm going to be taking ours to the Skoda dealer until the warrenty expires, then look elsewhere for a service next year.

The £80 labour to change the brake fluid & £80 to replace wires in the alternator are labour charges not for parts, so are no far out for a dealer.

I assume the £22.20 filter is the fuel filter? seems a lot.

Did they ask for the go ahead to repair the wiring loom? If not then the work was not authorized by you so is questionable.

As for not putting screen wash in, that's false economy in the winter - it doesn't take much to freeze up without it.

I think chris means put it in yourself and save some money. If its out of warrenty I'd shop about to be honest unless you really want the Skoda service history for its re-sale value.

Considering it's only a 20k service with inspection just buy the following:

oil filter

air filter

fuel filter

pollen filter (you don't need a new frame too)

5l of PD 505.01 oil

Take these bits to a normal garage and have them do the work if you can't do them yourself. Also get them to change the brake fluid.

I fitted my own air filter and pollen filter and left the garage to do the messy stuff (including a brake fluid change) at my last 20k-er. Cost me about £180 in total including bits (which came to about £80). I also got a BOGOF on PD oil as I bought it when it was on offer at Halfrauds. Means the next time I'm due a service the oil bit is free.

All you'll then have to check is that all the lights work, the wipers are ok, the tyres have good tread and top up your own washer bottle with fluid etc etc. Usual stuff. Doesn't need a 16 year old trainee in a Skoda overall to be paid £50 an hour or whatever to do the same job.

Take it to Nationwide Autocentre and you your tesco clubcard vouchers where a major service will cost you £50 in vouchers but be worth a good £260 if you paid cash. Also you get the MOT included.

I do this every year £50 is less than the cost of the parts & the MOT so there is no point in doing it yourself + they stamp the book if your interested in that mind you if they dont you still have the invoices etc showing what work was done.

They give you a red/amber/green and then its your call only though if those parts have failed the MOT would you get it done there if not then take it away think about it and maybe do it yourself or search round for the cheapest place to do it.

Another thing £16+VAT to fix wires in Altenator well you mus realise that a new altenator only costs £60-80 thats the more sensible choice IMHO.

From my understanding I think he has already had the work carried out so all this is a bit of a hindsight, he'll know next time though! You don't need to take your car to a main dealer for servicing, and VAT registered garage using VAG approved parts can service your car and if you still have a warrenty it will still be valid - so long as everything that should be serviced is.

Painful lesson to say the least but lesson definately learnt!!! Cheers for all the advise guys.

Fully agree then, but the way you said not to bother tho' was unclear, i always top mine up before a service that way you know the proper stuff has been used.

But if it's not the right stuff for VAG fan jet washers then"buyer beware"

The VAG screen wash will dilute to make 5 ltrs of -17 deg screen wash, (1ltr bottle of -70 deg)

? Not the right stuff? Its screen wash, thats like buying a Bocsh Washing Machine and them telling you you must use Bocsh tablets.
