vRS air filter upgrade?

Featured Replies

Hi

My VRS has been chipped although im not sure to what level. It is due for a service soon. Would an upgraded air filter be a good idea and if so what make and model??

Cheers

Simon

Hi, yes it's a good idea as it does help with breathing!

Most people recommend the green or pipercross panel filter. I myself have the pipercross panel filter (£30 from awesome gti) and it does the job fine.

Much louder?

It is not much louder at all

But a tad better throttle response , especially if it has been mapped

Awesome > Octavia Mk 1 1.8 20v Turbo vRS 01/01 -

There is a link to our on line shop , cheap and easy to do

No oil on that one , so cheaper to keep clean too

I have one on my Fabia 100PD and I saw better MPG too :D

Much louder?

A little yes, you can also hear the diverter valve more I found.

Worth a shot for £30 :)

Ethos me old mate, did you tell your insurance about the air filter and what did they say?

Me mate reckons they aren't bothered about charging extra for air filters

Sarah, would you say a decent cone filter would be louder than a panel filter on these cars?

Luke, anything you might gain from a cone filter (more filtered surface ares) will immediately be lost again since it will no longer have a forced cold air induction.

The main reason why people see an improvement in MPG is because the old filter was getting blocked and therefore restrictive.

In my experience changing the std filter every 10k miles rather than the recommended interval (up to 40k) has just as good effect and is obviously cheaper and less hassle as you don't have to clean them.

The Pipercross I fitted to my car gave 4MPG gains £28.00 + VAT too

The OEM filter can be approx £10 + VAT

Mine was in for 40k with no issues

If it requires cleaning then I would do it with a drop of Fairy liquid and do it that way

But at £28.00 + VAT I just bought a new one

It does give a tad more noise but nothing major

CAI`s will give more noise , nice tushhhh noise

Surely the fact that you hve a turbo on your car accounts for the 'forced cold air induction'. The standard filter setup and most CAI's have their cold air feeds in the same place, in front of the arch behind the bumper. The only difference being, stock setup has pipework before the filter, CAI's have more pipe work after the filter.

Forced air, means the intake is at the front of the car, so when you are moving forwards the air is forced into the intake pipe, any other kind simply draws the air in as it is needed, therefore forced air will always be colder (this is better as its denser).

Just like when you put your hand out of a moving car, the air is colder then when stationary.

Isn't the air fed via the vent in the front bottom corner of the bumper tho'?

Nah, thar corner is for the intercooler air.

So is there a feed for the filter then, or does it just sit in the corner getting the air from where it sits?

I thought the standard filter had a feed that disapears into the inner wing. This means it will be drawing air up from the same area that a CAI would.

It might be worth opening up the little honey comb parts of the lower grill if you do get a CAI, so that it's more open like the other side of the car where the SMIC is.

i want to put a K & N in my 100pd.Do you have to oil them? or is there another which is better and does not need oiling.

you can get a none oiled Pipercross.
