Fabia Vrs Brakes

Featured Replies

Hi all.

I noticed this morning that the brakes on our fabia vrs seem to be grinding or seem to be making that noise, I'm not a heavy person on the brakes or SWMBO either, but deduce it is coming from the back the car still seems to stop the same and maybe it's in our heads that the brakes are on the way out.

I have tended to notice that the noise does disapeer after say a mile or so or quietens down.

Never having a car with rear discs before, do you think it is dirt on the discs or on the pads, with the weather being it's rubbish self I don't really fancy taking the wheels off to have a look.

The car has only done 32300 miles and is nearly three years old and the last owner I can deduce was a older women.

The car was also recently serviced i september.

Hope you can help.

Davy

Just sounds like rust being cleared.

Cheers mate, you might be right I noticed it yesterday the ar this week has been mainly used to go shot hops to work and back, and the weather has been wet recently with snow and all that.

Would short hops to work put a surface rust on the discs.

I believe that this is a problem with quite a few Fabias. I know one of ours does it and my polo GTi used to do it as well. As though rust is on the discs even when there isn't. You can only really notice it when the radio isn't on.

Cheers

Dave.

Totally agree with the radio thing, I take after my dad if he hears a funny noise it's what is i sort of thing or turn the radio on.

I would try a few heavy stamps on the brakes from a respectable speed to help clear the crud.

The rear discs get very little use and tend to rust away before wearing out.

I have just had to replace my rear discs at approx 30k miles due to corrosion, not wear.

What sort of speed looking at something like 30mph, I was thinking of giving the car a wee blast along the coast tonight where braking is involved at some bends.

Davy

ditto, will be rust / crap on the discs for the first few miles.

With my 312's coming off my drive they sound as if the pads are grinding away but its just until they clear up !

Min has done this since I've had it (about a year and a half).

Everyone who gets in the car asks me about it, every single time!!!

The dealer said "yeah, it's just the pad material - they all do it"!!!!

I've tried stopping from a decent speed just with the handbrake, but it doesn't stop it at all. Any other suggestions?

They still work fine by the way!

I was thinking of something like 60mph, or try braking in reverse a few times.

I wouldn't worry about it too much tbh, this time of year with all the salt and crap on the roads, it's bound to accumulate.

if you jetwash your car, pay particular attention to the wheels, and arches, to remove as much mud etc as possible, especially under the upper rear arch, as this area seems to collect an inordinate amount of muck.

Thanks, the noise seemed to clear until we braked on a diffrent surface at my works car park, think I will pay a trip to the jet wash one day and clean the arches as suggested.

Davy

In your case your rear pads could be low, worth checking out?

I wouldn't have thought so tbh. When I changed mine there was at least 50% left on the pads, and I have been known to drive like an idiot.:D

My vRS has similar miles. The rear brakes have *always* been noisy.

I had my rear pads replaced at 33,000 miles on my vRS.....

Ours has done this since it was almost new. 'Spirited' driving and heavy braking doesn't seem to solve it, neither does driving with the hand brake slightly engaged.

It's just something you'll have to learn to live with and ignore I think.

Incidently, none of the other cars I've owned with rear discs have done this.

Nothing will cure it, they will rust overnight and clear when you make the first

application in the morning. The only way to overcome it is to fit stainless steel a disc :)

With other cars though you can see the rust, it doesn't make a grinding noise, and as you say, it disappears with the first application.

The Fabias disks on the other hand appear to be ok but sound as if your pads are made of sandpaper. And it doesn't go away with use.

Strange one.

I' going to try and live with it till friday and maybe pop it over to Kwik fit if I can get a day off and see if they can have a week look, car stops well tried slowing in a ermergency and seem to pull to a stop quite well, just the fact myself and SWMBO are going away for a weekend next week.

there have been at least 2 different types of pad material used for the Fabia rear pads , my original (March 04VRS)pads were always quiet , whereas my dads (June 04VRS) are always noisy , i'm running Ford Galaxy rear pads at the moment , no grinding noise and very cheap for me(£16 iirc)

Davy don't worry about it, You want to hear mine, just broke 8k tonight, And they've always been noisy. I've just learned to live with it. And FFS dont pop into KF they'll condemn the lot and try and sell you new disks and pads. What did your dad think of the spitter?

Hey buddy - exactly the same on mine at the moment - seems a lot worse with the cold weather - hadn't really noticed it before. Also - the ABS and ASR lights come on when I start the car and stay on for a few seconds - seems to have only started happening in the cold - anyone know if this is normal?

mine does the same - sometimes goes "clunk" when the handbrake has been on for a while during wet/cold.

mine's been sitting unused on the drive for about a week now, - SWMBO decreeed that after all the driving we did over the Christmas week (~800 miles) the other car needed using to balance out - so am dreading to think what sort of noise it'll make tomorrow if I try and use it.
