Is this a good deal or what?

Featured Replies

I'm about to retire my old R reg 306 1.9TD and my garage recommended anything with a "PD" engine as "they never seem to go wrong". After looking around the Fabia appears to be a decent buy for the money.

Anyway, this isn't yet up for sale but will be shortly:

02 plate Fabia 1.9TDi Elegance

45,000 miles, FSH

£5,695

From a Skoda dealer so has 3 months warrantee and 12 months MOT as standard. Need to ask about Tax, forgot about that one!

Apparently they're fixing a tyre, the anti-roll bar needs doing, new cambelt (which previous owner didn't do), new (water?) pump (which they recommend with a new cambelt anyway) and new oil. This will all be done in the next few days before it goes on sale.

Sound like a good deal? Anything in particular to look for? Seems perfect for me although test drive will be next weekend.

Not sure whether it's a good deal or not i'm afraid....... But....... i thought all used skodas came with 12 months warranty when bought from a Skoda dealer.

Might be wrong though.....

Cheers

Dave.

It's six years old, therefore the 12 month warrantee is at dealer's discretion. Skoda.co.uk list a minimum 3 months which is what's on offer.

The car can't be 6 years old till at least the 1st March though if it's an 02 plate...... I know it's picky but officially the car is under 6 years old so should come with the 1 year warranty. To be honest i'd just mention this to the dealer as technically according to the Skoda website the shorter warranty only applies to cars that are at least 6 years old this one is at most 5 years and 10 months old..... And could be 5 years and 4 months old if registered in August 2002.

The Skoda UK websites says as follows....... "If you’re buying a car that’s less than six years of age with less than 60,000 miles on the clock you’ll automatically receive a 12 month warranty. Older cars come with a minimum of 3 months’ warranty."

Cheers

Dave.

That isn't a million miles from an older VRs, if you can and fancy one of those instead I'd hold out personally.

I'd say it seems expensive.

My estate version of the same car (bought today) cost me £7900 with 35k on the clock, and it's only 16 months old.

That was from a main dealer with the remainder of the warranty and 6 months tax included.

Start searching for the various problems - wet floors due leaking door seals (unless these have been done under warranty ) is one . All speeds on heater is another. Minor niggles - price -don't honestly know .

Now that's an excellent point and one I'll take up with the dealer when I call Tuesday. Thank you!

I'll report back...

Aren't the vRS models more of a sporty model? I.e. Insurance will be higher?

Intention is to get a high value for money car with reliability and low running costs.

Sounds like you got an exceptional deal - I'm comparing against those on AutoTrader and finding the price about right.

price sounds a bit high for me , IMHO

Sounds a bit expensive, especially if warranty is 3 months and not 12.

I've just upgraded from an S-Reg 306 DT! You'll find these Fabia's nearly as engaging to drive, and a hell of a lot more economical!

The post seems a little steep, but is within the parker's guidelines.

Group 9 I think and a fun drive, 45 - 50 mpg is a regular thing.

The choice is yours of course.

also seems dear to me, for another 1,000 pounds you could get a 2004 VRS with about 40k miles..

According to what car valuation its £1,000 dear, even from a dealer.

What you doing with the 306?

So in the real world its only worth the top end of 3 grand then.. thats at most:thumbdwn:

Hmm Parkers reckon £5,535 with 40,000 miles. Looking at autotrader.co.uk the What Car price would be a complete bargain - there aren't any with that engine / trim / year / mileage for for less than £5k.

Still, will call Skoda UK tomorrow to query the warrantee at least.

Dunno what I'd get for the 306 - it's got a lot of mileage (145k+) and while the dealer will PX they suggest a private sale would of course get me more. Questionable whether it's worth it.

BTW - anyone know what the road tax is?

Still sounds dear, i would have a look privately for a good one if it were me.

What year model 306 is it? i was on the 306 forum as i had a hdi, might be able to sus a private price for you...

I was advised by our regular mechanic to get one from a dealer for the warrantee, and finding a 1.9TDI Elegant in Silver isn't all that easy. I do wonder if the higher price reflects lack of stock perhaps? Dunno really.

The 306 is 1997 R reg with a 1.9TD engine. I was told specifically not to buy HDI as they (certainly the early ones) were utter crap. This appears to be reflected in the Top Gear 2006 survey...

No no, the HDi are far more refined, bomb proof reliablity, mines was at 141k miles when i sold.

If your 306 is a 3 door and the newer shape? i would say with the mileage about £900??

Also the dealer warranty isnt worth a toss anyway, only covers the engine and gearbox, not anything else, i would be inclined to go private..

5 Door older shape, metalic red, FSH, MOT until May. Mechanic is a Peugeot-trained specialist, now independent. He has enough grim stories about HDi engines and their poor customers to put anyone off them...

nope, the older DT's are prone to shooting conrods im afraid.

Especially around the 98/99 era, what with the dreaded EGR's, hope yours is disconnected??

HDi only problem are crankshaft pulleys and the odd fuel pump failure but other than that there pretty much bombproof.

As its the 5 door older shape i wouldnt expect much tbh.

£600/700 or so

Road tax is £115 for 12 months I believe.
