Software to measure net usage

Featured Replies

Hi,

Thinking of changing to a limited usage broadband connection (40gb per month), but I'm really not sure how much I currently use.

So, I'm looking for a simple (free) program to install on several PC's to monitor the info sent (router doesn't / can't store this info). Only interested in total data, don't want a silly net-nanny type program. I've looked on google and several do exist but they all seem 3 / 4 years out of date, anyone know of any 'good' ones?

Thanks.

Tim

What does your typical usage consist of? Mine is gaming, a LOT of browsing, and downloading occasional large files ;) and I never went near 40GB (according to Pipex when I left them).

That might actually be your best bet - ask your current ISP what your usage is.

Agree withe Kaiser. Lots of ISPs keep stats on what type and how much data you are downloading and some, eg Plusnet, even make it available online so you can see how close you are to any imposed limits.

If you want something to install on your PC, Welcome @ JITServ Home ! - Down2Home Freeware. has been recommended to me but I've never used it. Hopefully it can distinguish between data sent to machines on the LAN and out to t'Interweb.

Thanks.

Generally two / three PC's browsing net (maybe three, four hours a day), a reasonable amount of bittorrenting ;), radio streaming, BBC iplayer streaming...

I really have no idea how much that comes too, although I realise 1.3gb is a fair chunk of data each day.

I'll have a look into that Chris :)

Is the 40Gb part of a fair usage policy (ie only applied during peak hours) or is it a hard and fast monthly limit?

Chris

I am with BT and have no download limit :)

Doesn't really make it clear, just states a '40gb usage allowance' but then goes on to talk about fair usage  The company is talktalk if anyone knows.

Len: currently unrestricted here too, but the 40gb is cheaper and faster.

All I know is that I received notification that my download was unlimited :)

Had a quick look at the T&C's and it sounds like the limit is 40Gb a month, but they might restrict your connection if you're deemed to be stealing lots of bandwidth from other users, eg running peer-to-peer stuff peak time. Guess it depends how big your torrents are as to whether 40Gb is a problem. I'm currently half-way through my billing month (which has included 5 days working from home and my web usage is 1.45Gb and 203Mb of streaming (mostly Youtube I guess  ) so that still leaves about 35Gb for torrents. :D

Thanks Chris.

Yeah, it reads that if you abuse the connection in peak periods they can cap your connection speeds, especially if your using P2P software. TBH compared to some I don't using torrents that much, and certainly nowhere near a gig a day.

As an aside, a half hour beeb programme on iplayer was/is about 130Mb.
