Brake Discs - How hard ?

Featured Replies

Just had an MOT and had an advisory on the front discs. I'm kind of wondering how hard these are to replace. I'm handy with a spanner (MGB in the garage) but limited in knowledge (MGB is first car I have spannered).

Is there a guide to disc replacement ? Otherwise it will have to be at the end of the month - my mileage is limited usually.

Cheers

They're not as simple as the pads, and can sometimes be a bit of a bitch to get off as far as I am aware....given patience you could probably manage it.

When I did mine, the ABS light came on (I think I might have knocked the sensor), after a dab on the brakes the light went out though, so I thought nothing of it.. :D

Try this thread Post 19 has a link to a nice writeup on seatcupra.net and post 22 has some pics by me. All based on Octavia but you won't find any significant differences. A 1 spanner job in Haynes parlance.

Thanks - unfortunately that link (in post 19) seems dead, do you have a copy ?

Nope, sorry. There's another link in one of the other threads (try searching on "disc replacement") to a writeup on Passat forums, but I've not looked at it. It really is simple. If you have a Haynes manual for your B (GT owner here, btw ), you could virtually use the same guide, or the 4 pictures in my post pretty much sum it up. I've written endless sets of instructions in other threads also, so if you'll forgive me, I won't reproduce them again here.

Nope...

No problem, I'll do that.

Mines a GT too, 73 CB in "stomach upset" beige...

its pretty straight forward, jack it up, take the wheel off, undo the brake fluid reservoir cap, slacken the disc retaining screw with the brakes applied, remove the pads, undo the calliper retaining bolts from the innerside and support the calliper once removed, with the disc retaining screw removed the disc will come off, if not a firm whack with a hammer should see it off the hub, do the reverse to put the new disc on. Might be worth changing the pads while its stripped down.

What the man said - except as far as I know you can't remove the pads until you've removed the caliper.

I'm not handy with a spanner, but have managed to change a couple of sets of disks on the fabia, and found it quite easy.

Wheel of, caliper off, disc off, wire brush hub, new disc on, fit new pads, wheel back on, doddle.

slacken the disc retaining screw with the brakes applied

Would that not require a 2nd person to help?

Maybe add copper ease hub a little bit to prevent disc "welding" to hub - also add a little copper ease to disc outer face to stop alloy wheel "welding" to hub/disc. Remember that the MOT warning was an advisery - ie it should be safe to wait until Spring/Summer - less snow and more heat! I think an advisery means "we don't want to see them next year"!
