Window smashed - loose glass in bottom of door

Featured Replies

I had the misfortune to have my car broken into last night and in the process, the drivers front window was smashed in a 'smash & grab'

Whilst the window can be replaced, I can still here lots of loose broken glass in the bottom of the door rattling around. Is there any way that this can be removed either by myself or at the dealers? I don't think it's an easy task either way?

remove the door card and you should be able to get a hoover nossle into the wee nooks and crannies where the glass sits.

You may need to make an incision in the protective waterproof membrane depending on whereabouts the glass has fallen.

Is this easy to do? TBH I'm a little hesitant to start stripping the door down on a 3 month old car but I'll have a go if it's easy to get the door card off.

If I take it to the dealers, will it be a big expensive job to do?

Can only comment on the Mk1 Octy, which has Torx screws around the sides and bottom - the top just clips onto the door IIRC.

Most car door trims are relatively easy to remove you just have to watch for things like hidden screws inside the door handle or on the arm rests, etc.

A garage will do it for you, but will also probably charge way more than the job is worth.

I'm sure some nice Mk2 Octy owning member will be along shortly to confirm/deny my thoughts on the subject ;)

The company that fits your replacement window will need to remove the door card anyway, and in theory they should clean it all up so you dont need to do anything.

Let's hope they do but that's good to know anyway. My only worry was that the glass is in the door itself and therefore may be hard to reach?

I'll mention it to Autoglass when I take the car in tomorrow and see what they say. If they do have to take the door card off to get the new window in then it shouldn't be too much bother to clean the door out at the same time should it?

Will keep you informed after the work's been done anyway. Thanks for the advice so far :)

Thats what I was thinking. No point in taking the door card off twice for the same job ;) Might be asking them politely to make sure they give it a good clean out.

Sorry to hear about your problem - Having had the same thing happen to me just before Christmas, make sure you let them know the paintwork around the door card is perfect... They used a screwdriver on mine and nicely scratched the paint work!

As for bits of glass... I've still got some in the air vents, and loads under the seat brackets

I've used two branches of Autoglass and they've done it properly both times.

OK just had the car done and they've done a sterling job, would heartily recommend them. The guy doing the work explained that it may be difficult to remove all the glass due to side impact bars in the door etc making it hard to reach some places but I can't hear anything now :)

There is damage to the outside window rubber seal and also a small scratch to the door where a screwdriver or similar device was used. This was picked up by Autoglass without me saying anything but obviously their job is just to replace the window.

If I get a new seal from Skoda, is it easy to replace? The scratch, fortunately, is only a shallow one and so may look better with a touch of t-cut on it but failing that I don't know what to do about that.

I have just suffered a similar fate but with the heated rear window in my Octy 2. My Insurance company required me to use RAC Auto Windscreens. Firstly it took them from last Friday afternoon until this morning before they got the window in. They have told me that they can't get all the bits out of the tailgate so I am having to suffer the occasional noise from the movement of the glass fragments. I am not impressed. The car is only 6 months old.

I know all the insurance policies I've had cover the glass and damage to the surrounding area due to glass?

If they used the method to break the glass I’m thinking of, it takes quite a bit of force. Can/have you peeled the seal away from the frame to see the metal underneath it?

IME the seal hides more damage :(

The damage to the rubber seal looks like 2 perforations about 1 - 2cm apart on the vertical. Not liking the sound of this but I'll have a look. The window frame from the inside looks ok, no damage there.

What can I do if the frame is damaged more than first thought? I'm thinking it would be a full claim on the insurance but then I did read that Direct Line cover against vandalism with no loss of no-claims provided you get a crime reference number from the Police (which forunately I have)

I hope its ok but its definitely worth checking. Haven't got any photos to show unfortunately but there were only a couple of marks on the rubber but the frame was badly kinked. Obviously a mk2 octy is leaps and bounds from a mk2 ibiza but I'd still expect the window seal to sit on some sort of rim/edge

As to the other query, I don't know as it happened to my old car which was not worth cosmetically repairing. You just wish they'd put something straight through the window rather than trying to crack the glass carefully and damaging the frame.

Right, been drinking so can't be rrrsd to read all posts. Window replacement company should clean out the door glass. We still have glass in th eseat runners, even after hoovering the damn car out 3 times.

Our passenger door was ferked because they used a handful of stones to break the glass and then leant on a wet door covered in glass shards to rummage around. Still, could have been worse.....

Regards

Mark
