SMF & Clutch advice

Featured Replies

Hi,

I think I should start looking into this before the clutch starts to slip and/or the DMF gives up the ghost. So I've got a few questions.

What options in terms of makes are there? So far I’ve only seen 2 from Helix autosport & SPEC.

Is there going to be any notable difference between organic and sintered friction plates?

And finally to those who've had a SMF fitted is there a huge difference in vibration & noise?

I know there’s always the option of up rating the clutch but keeping the DMF, probably cheaper. But I don’t really want to go down that route because of the vibration I’m getting under heavy acceleration. It’s making the car a bit un-drivable constantly having to drive around the torque curve.

Thanks

Graham

I recently fitted a Helix Organic clutch and uprated SMF, the cheapest place i could find delivered was Mardi Gras motorsport (they have a website i believe) I tried the likes of Jabbasport and the Derv doctor but they were all more expensive

The clutch and fly delivered to my door was £830 and was the uprated heavier SMF as it reduces the noise at idle over the previous design. I have to say noise and vibration at idle is grately increased but for the performance gains it doesnt really bother me.. If needs be i just sit with my foot on the clutch and the noise goes away (handy at mcdonalds drive thrus etc)

Hi, was that £830 just for the Helix flywheel and Clutch? Or did it come with a new release bearing, clutch master cylinder etc?

I ask because i've just been quoted £934 for a Helix SMF kit from Awesome GTi with the heavier Flywheel setup you've got.

Cheers

Neil

Everything, also mines was the heavier set up, Awesome was the dearest quote i received althought there customer service was very good

Running a Helix setup - with the steel SMF. I've heard you don't want to go too light with the Ally one.

The chatter is not an issue at all for me, even with a polyurethane-filled dogbone mount.....

oilburninnut, do you mind me asking how much you paid & which spec clutch kit you went for and what's it rated for in terms of torque?

Jasc/Basil, what are the helix setups rated for?

349 ft/lb I-IRC - keep meaning to recheck...

remember reading a post somewhere where using a clutch far higher than your engine output wasn't good but can't remember any specifics.....

i've got the spec stage 3+ and ally flywheel, all in with delivery and us taxes, import taxes the lot was £890 the clutch is rated over 450ft lbs i think(i was assured it was way more clutch than i will ever need)jason probably knows exactly, mine was a problem to actually find the right one but now we have it should be no problem in finding another,if you speak to justin at the tt shop,he knows all about it and will put you right:thumbup:

Ummm - 560lb/ft at the wheels more like! :P

i knew it was a lot,more than the stage 4 oddly:confused:

the Helix is rated at 440 i believe, i wouldnt trust the yanks when it comes to cars /\
